Athletics

Congratulations to all the St Pius athletes who competed at Saturday’s Invitational Carnival at SOPAC. This was our biggest team to compete so far this season. The next invitational on Saturday is at E S Marks, followed by the ISA Carnival at Homebush on 11th September.

This Saturday SPX is hosting. Please let me know if you can help: rlacey@stpiusx.nsw.edu.au

The provisional ISA team will be going up on the noticeboard outside the Gym. A meeting will be held at lunchtime in the Gym on 4/09 to help finalise selections (fitness, availability, choice of events) and hand out information for the ISA.

All ISA selected athletes have to train this Wednesday 5/09 and then compete at ES Marks on Saturday. It will be particularly important for our relay teams.

ISA Team Selection to compete at NSWCIS

Competitors finishing in the TOP 3 in each Age Group but across both divisions at the ISA gain selection into the ISA Athletics Team to compete in the NSWCIS Athletics Championships Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre on 25th September.

Please note that even though a student may place in their race, they may not make the ISA team as there are two divisions for each event and students competing up an age are considered in their own age bracket for CIS.

FOOTBALL CLUB NEWS

The Football Presentation night tonight (Wednesday 5th September) sees the end of the Football season for 2018.  The Committee thanks all the parents, teacher coaches, Old Boy coaches and especially all the boys who represent the College in such a great light.  Every week they exhibit great enthusiasm and spirit regardless of the results.

A special thanks to Simon Yue - Senior Football Coordinator, Paul Cummins - Junior School Football Coordinator, and Technical Director – Chris Semaan and his coaching team for all their efforts and support throughout the season.

The Committee is particularly pleased that we were able to provide coaching assistance to the Junior School throughout their sports days at Oxford Falls as well as for Years 7-9 during PDHPE lessons. We had two dedicated coaches available every training session for the Senior College teams across the season who assisted coaches in introducing a structured training program as well as Chris Semaan attending most Saturdays on ground while the teams played.  This gave him a valuable insight into the level of the boys' game skills and allowed him to focus on those teams needing additional coaching assistance.

We also organised two very successful Football Skills Camps during the holidays in Terms 1 and 2.

The SPX 1st XI had a season of ups and downs, retaining the EREA Football Cup in the annual tournament held in Canberra this year.  They were knocked out of the CIS Cup in the quarter finals to the eventual winners, then went on to be undefeated in the regular ISA competition.  Unfortunately they came up short in the finals, being knocked out in a penalty shoot-out in the semis by St Spyridon's who went on to beat St Pat's and become ISA Champions 2018.

We have a renewed Football Committee in place, with some parents leaving as their sons finish up at the College.  The Committee will continue to focus on adding value to the Football community of St Pius X College.

Drought Relief fundraising:  The College will be selling raffle tickets for their Drought Relief fundraising on the Presentation Evening this Wednesday so bring along your ca$h.  This is a great cause that affects all of us.

Rugby

Under 15s New Zealand Tour 2019:   Last week at the presentation evening all players from the Under 14s age group received an invitation to the 2019 New Zealand Tour. The tour will occur during the first week of the April school holidays, departing Sydney on Friday 12th April and returning on Friday 19th April in time for Easter Weekend.

The tour is open to any boy who currently plays rugby or is interested in playing rugby in the future. It is not graded and there is no selection process, just a minimum number of 20 boys for the tour to go ahead. Students must be eligible for the Under 15s in 2019, that is they turn 15 next year.

Expressions of interest are due to be returned to the office or via email (JLynch@stpiusx.nsw.edu.au) by Friday 7th September with an information evening to occur on Tuesday 11th September in the Sarto Centre from 6pm.

I ask parents to consider this fantastic opportunity for their sons, with more information available in the invitation.
