Shout out

To those out there who maybe 'Marie Kondo-ing' wardrobes, if you have any skirt hangers spare you’d like to be rid of, I would appreciate the donation.  We use them to store the big books and I’m running out.  Thanking you in advance.

FYI Book Club

Book Club orders are generally processed and submitted at least twice during the current Issue’s time frame.  Generally, the week of the Due Date an order is placed, with another processed the week following the Due Date.  Therefore orders are distributed in two batches, so depending on when orders are placed is when you’ll receive them.  There is also the option to have orders sent directly to your home address for a small delivery fee via Scholastic’s LOOP ordering.  We can only place three orders per issue before we are required to pay freight on the order, which we try to avoid as much as possible.

Book Reviews

Read a good book lately…???  Yes, then we’d love to hear about it!  Review templates will be available from the library from next week for any students wishing to provide a book recommendation to their fellow booklovers, and it will be published in the Newsletter.

Speaking of which…I’ve just finished a great book, Lenny’s Book of Everything by Karen Foxlee.  Wonderfully written with likeable and relatable characters, it combines humour, family relationships with imagination and love. Lenny has a younger brother Davey, who has a form of Gigantism and won’t stop growing, which is the main focus, but the fighting spirit of their single Mum, Lenny and Davey is a joy to follow.  Central to the story is the bright spot every week with the arrival of the latest issue of the Burrell's Build-It-at-Home Encyclopaedia. Through the encyclopaedia, Lenny and Davey experience the wonders of the world and dream about a life of freedom and adventure.

It has also been short-listed for the CBCA Book of the Year for Older Readers, 2019.  I’m looking forward to hearing from the students about their thoughts on the book, which will be a New Book for next week for the senior unit.

Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge

The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and Woodend Primary School is excited to be participating.

  • The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 6 September 2019.
  • Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books.
  • All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and former Premiers.
  • To read the Premier’s letter to parents, view the booklists and for more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge, visit: www.education.vic.gov.au/prc
