News from our Classrooms

Foundation News

Today is Day 56 as we count towards 100 Days of School in Foundation. Last week the students and myself met every day at 11am on our Google Classroom Meet. It was wonderful to be able to see each other and to have a bit of a chat. They were all excited as one by one we came online. It was very heart-warming to see and hear them greet each other. I have included a couple of photos of our meets. We have managed to play Number Bingo twice and on other days we have brought an item to share that is a particular colour for the day.

We are all very excited, happy and a little bit nervous about returning to school next week, but we are looking forward to being together again. I have to thank the Foundation parents for their fantastic work with remote learning, it has been a pleasure working with them to provide learning at home for such a delightful group of children. The parents have worked and consulted via email to give their children the best possible learning in very unusual and different times. So thank you so much for your efforts!

Year 1/2 News

This week, the Grade 1/2's have continued to be persistent and confident throughout their remote learning journey.

The 1/2's have just found out about a new visitor who is coming to our school!

Our school is fortunate enough to have a life-size fibreglass cow visit our lucky Grade 1/2 students. The students have been focusing on recording their wonderings and questions that they have about why this cow may be at our school. They have also been putting in lots of amazing name suggestions to consider for when we all return.

We are very excited to return to school and be able to investigate our visitor together!

Year 3/4 News

The Year 3/4 students have now completed 5 full weeks of learning at home! Congratulations! What a remarkable effort they have all shown!  Our Middle School students are developing their competence and independence in managing to access their scheduled learning activities and upload their work.  Having the ability to see each other, even through a computer screen has been really positive over the last few weeks. The small group Google Meet sessions with students and teachers is working well.

In Literacy and Inquiry, the students have looked at different points of view and are learning to view and write texts from the perspectives of different people and characters. This week they will use the “Somebody Wanted But So" reading strategy in Literacy to help them to summarize what they have just read.  They will then transfer these key ideas into writing a succinct summary text.

In Maths, the Year 3/4 students are investigating Location and are learning to read maps and give directions using both grid references and compass points.

In Religion, we are reading the scripture “The Feeding of Five Thousand” and have begun exploring the idea that food can feed our hunger as well as feed us spiritually, as in the bread at Eucharist.

Please take the time to view and to read some of our student’s wonderful work! We are very proud of our students and are counting down the days till we will get to see them all again back in the classroom!

Year 5/6 News

The Grade 5/6 students continue to work hard during this period of Remote Learning.

In Mathematics, the students have been working on drawing and using Google Sheets to represent data. The work being presented has been fantastic and very creative in the way it has been accurately presented.

In Inquiry, the focus has been on significant events in Australian history. The students have been researching about the First Fleet, Convict Settlement and Captain Arthur Phillip.

Mary, The Mother of Jesus has been a focus in Religious Education. As May is the month of Mary, the students have been looking at major events in Mary’s life.

Last week, for the first time, small groups of students came together through a Google Meet to participate in the ‘Words Their Way Spelling Program.’ Each student had their own spelling words and with the assistance of one another and the teacher were able to identify spelling patterns and their meaning. The second small group Google Meet saw all students participate in the Reading Comprehension program where they read a selected novel and actively engaged themselves in discussion about the text.

All grades continue to meet each Monday, Tuesday and Thursday morning. This gives us all an opportunity to see one another's faces and continue to connect while still at home. Every Friday afternoon we finish our week on Google Meet with a fun activity. Last week saw us all in our Beanies and over the last 2 weeks all students have had the opportunity to bring a pet to the Meet. This has been great fun.

We thank the Grade 5/6 students for all their hard work over the last week.

Mr MacGregor, Miss Sargent, Mr Jennings and Mrs Casamento.
