Staff Members New to HCC in 2020
We have had a break from introducing staff new to HCC this year, so this week we would love to introduce to you: Mrs Christina Douglas.
What subject/s and year level/s do you teach?
At HCC this year I am teaching careers and vocational pathways in Year 9&10 and entrepreneurial skills in Year 7&8.
Where have you taught previously? If a graduate, where did you study?
Previous to my time at HCC, I taught (for the past 19 years!) at Kilvington Grammar School in Ormond. Kilvington is also a Prep-Year 12 school, and so throughout my time there, I taught in a variety of different areas. I began as a Primary school teacher in the Junior School, and then after maternity leave, came back to a part-time role teaching Religious Education across the whole school as well as a Year 10 elective introduction to social enterprise.
What motivated/drew/led you to becoming a teacher?
One thing I recently asked my Year 10 students was, what did you “play” when you were 10 years old… I remember playing schools! Yep – I pretty much always enjoyed arranging party games at my cousins’ birthdays and being a Junior Leader at Sunday school or camps or the like. I remember thinking as a young girl that I wanted to become a teacher - so I could break down the lessons and make the difficult stuff make sense…That is still my aim as a teacher today.
What were your first impressions of HCC?
My first impressions of HCC were of a friendly, accepting, loving community. Staff have been kind and gracious, students have been enthusiastic and willing to learn, and parents have been welcoming and friendly. My son in Year 9, and I, have both felt accepted quickly. My youngest son is looking forward to beginning at HCC in Year 7 next year.
What are your hobbies/extra interests?
My hobbies and interests involve being creative. I love to make things, and write - and I have a vintage caravan that we renovated and named Mabel (after my nana) which is my creative space for doing these things. I also enjoy baking and going to the movies with my husband, Anthony.
Business Week in Salt Café!
Our Year 7&8 Enterprise Skills elective will be operating their student businesses on Tuesdays (9 to 23 June) at lunchtime in the Salt Café. All students are encouraged to visit and support them! Here are their small business:

The donut soap cost $4.50, the organic ones cost $5.00 and the light lamps cost $9. The profit from this event will be going to charity, to help people living in developing countries. They will have a start in business to help their family make an income.

Year 11 Biology: Rat Dissection
On Tuesday 26 May, the Year 11 Biology students undertook rat dissection. The learning that occurs courtesy of a dissection is vastly different to that which occurs in a typical lesson. Having studied the digestive system earlier in the term, dissection gives the students first-hand experience in seeing the subject matter. Such a hands-on learning environment can impart an appreciation and understanding of anatomy, unparalleled by second-hand teaching techniques.
Many students find it much easier to learn when carrying out physical activities, and this helps them to more fully engage with the subject matter being studied. Hands-on dissection allows students to see, touch and explore the various organs of the digestive and other systems. Seeing organs in vivo and understanding how they work within a single animal may strengthen students’ comprehension of biological systems. When applied to their own bodies, this may then translate to a greater understanding of human biology.

Queen’s Birthday Public Holiday: Monday 8 June
Monday 8 June is the Queen’s Birthday and is a public holiday. School will resume on Tuesday 9 June. We hope that all families have a safe and enjoyable long weekend.
VCE Pathways Night: Thursday 18 June
We are planning a remote evening for parents of Year 9 to 11 students, explaining the VCE systems, HCC's pathways and the VCE subject selection process.
It will be a very valuable event to help parents understand the workings of the ATAR and VCE, as well as see the varied pathways that we are able to offer to students. Including the option of doing an 'accelerated' VCE subject for Year 10 students. More information to follow.

Community Care at HCC – Supporting Family Businesses
We realise that a number of HCC families with businesses are doing it tough at the moment so we would like to help in some small way and garner the support of our HCC community.
If you are a small business owner, are still in operation at the moment and could do with some extra promotion of your business to our College community, please send some information (and photos if possible) through to the office@hcc.vic.edu.au and we will do a promotion through our College Facebook page and, where appropriate, through our newsletter.
Just a small thing but hopefully something that can help you through these difficult economic times.

Term 3 Earlier Start Date
As the annual Christian Schools Australia (CSA) staff conference has been cancelled due to the Coronavirus, we have decided to commence Term 3 one day earlier than previously advertised (Wednesday 15 July). The first day of Term 3 for all students from Prep-Year 12 will now be Tuesday 14 July.
Library Opens
Library is now opened to all HCC students! They can browse books in the Library, and can borrow ONLY FOR USE WITHIN HCC PREMISES, as long as they hand sanitise on entry and exit from the Library.
Signs have been put up, with hand sanitiser at the entrance to both libraries. A printed procedure for returning books has been placed at the Primary borrowing desk.
Returning book procedure is:
- Put on gloves
- Wand books back as usual and place on trolley
- Spray & wipe keyboard, mouse and wand
- Remove gloves and put in bin.
Library staff will then sanitise and quarantine all returned books before returning them to shelves. Returned books cannot be reloaned until they have been cleaned and quarantined.
All cleaning equipment is in place and will be monitored by Library staff.

HCC Care Fund (Update)
A huge thank you to the many HCC families who have donated to our HCC CARE fund. We have had over $11,000 donated to the fund, most of which has now been allocated to families in need. Through the incredible generosity of our HCC community, we have been able to provide immediate financial assistance with school fees to families in genuine need in our community.
The HCC families we have assisted so far have all expressed their extreme gratitude towards those who have donated to the fund. A number of our families are still facing extremely difficult times. We firmly agree that our stand is to do all we can to keep all our students within our school community.
HCC-CARE has been established to provide alternative fee arrangements and prudent financial monitoring to assist families in genuine need. All donations to our scholarship fund have been and will be carefully allocated to any HCC family in great need who have been directly financially impacted by the Coronavirus to assist with school fees.
We still have a need to assist families in need in our Community. You can join us by directly depositing a donation into the College bank account, details below.
