The end of Semester 1

The end of Semester 2 brings a myriad of experiences for our young people. The senior students tend to get a little edgy as their mid year exams roll around, the Year 10’s get the chance to experience of a week of work in the real world, the entire school draws a close to the semester and roll over into a new semester with new electives and in some cases new teachers however the highlight each year is St Peter’s Day. Sadly a family commitment overseas meant that I was not able to be with the community this year and I am very grateful to Ms Sarah Hogan (Acting Head of Campus) and Mr David Bardi (Acting Pastoral Care Leader) who stepped up in their roles to enable me to be with my family at this time. As it happens part of my family trip included a pilgrimage through Vatican City and the Basilica San Giovanni, visiting the location where St Peter was crucified upside down for his faith in Jesus and the place where St Peter’s body now rests - it was a moving experience that I recommend to anyone who can visit but that may be a story for another day.

From all reports St Peter’s Day was a hit. The day began with a celebration of the Eucharist as a community and this then led into a day of rides, activities and food - a festival atmosphere created to celebrate who we are. Students have let me know that the most popular ride was the Music Trip while the creative space in Arts Precinct was a real hit along with the Games zone in the Library. St Peter’s day traditionally ends with a showcase of some of our more talented performers and I hear that this year with no exception with the St Peter’s Day Talent Quest placings being

  • 1st Chloe Lacienta
  • 2nd Natasha Stulec and June for their K-Pop routine,
  • Aiden Smith (Year 7) won the Wildcard for his performance of Back in Black by ACDC.

Reports back from the students was of a great day and we look forward to building on it further in 2024.

A little pat on the back to acknowledge the midway point

A Year 12 pizza lunch was offered to our senior students at the end of semester 2 to say well done on a busy term, including completing VCE practice exams and the VCAL presentations. The mid-year point is a wonderful opportunity for all students, but especially those in their final year, to reflect on what has been and recalibrate for an assault on the final months. Our Pastoral Period this week will continue this reflection as the students spend some time writing down what worked well for semester 1 and what new goals they might have for semester 2…. and importantly, listing the steps they are going to put in place to set up the right habits of success.

Where to from here?

Coming off the back of this reflection on Semester 1 is the very important period of Subject Selections that our Year 7-10 students will be going through in the coming weeks. Other sections of this publication will report back on the Futures Day and on Subject Selection but for my part I would like to echo the message of House Leaders, Subject Learning Coaches and our Career’s Counsellor Ms Dillon, that this is a time when parents/carers and students work closely with staff to ensure everyone’s voice is heard, the right information is shared and the decisions are made on the best subjects and pathways for the interests and skills of the individual young person. Choosing the right course is the first step toward a happy young person who is motivated to put in the necessary hours of work to achieve their very best.
