FUTURES EXPO - SELECTING 2024 PATHWAYS

At this time of year students of all year levels will begin to think about 2024. This can be in pathways (VCE-VM, VCE, Applied Learning, Apprenticeships), subjects to help students on the next step to their career or in the Year 12 case - tertiary pathways such as TAFE or University.

On Monday 17 July students from Year 8-12 had the opportunity to find out more about 2024 through the various activities at Futures Expo. The day allowed students in these year levels to research and find out more about what 2024 may look like for them. A summary below:

Year 8 - Explanation of Year 9 electives and at Clyde North, what the Year 9 Program entails Year 9 - A focus on the pathway options at Year 10 (Mainstream or Applied Learning) as well as a subject surfing exercise relating to all subjects including the level/difficulty of Maths, the type of Science, whether to begin a VCE subject, one year earlier, as well as other elective choices

Year 10 - An explanation of what the Vocational Major (VM), VET and VCE entail and the subjects which are on offer in all 3 of these pathways

Year 11 & 12 - A visit to tertiary institutions enabling research and understanding of potential tertiary offerings. They were then invited to take part in the information session which included one on one conversations and advice from Universities and TAFE representatives.

When it comes to what the student and the parent can do after the Expo, there are a few pointers below:

1. Self-Reflection: Encourage your child to reflect on their interests, strengths and long-term goals. What subjects do they enjoy? What skills do they want or need to develop? Which career paths are the potentially looking at?

2. Research and Guidance: After the Futures Expo, all students in Year 9 and Year 10 will attend a Course Advice Interview via Zoom. Before this interview and post the interview, students should carry out thorough research on the subjects they are considering by the subject teachers and/or careers guidance from either Ms Dillon (Cranbourne) or Ms Cardamone (Clyde North). They should explore areas such as Study/Course Designs, Tertiary Requirements and Skills Required and see how they align with their current interests and aspirations.

 3. Long Term Planning: Encourage your child to think about their long term educational and career goals. Mapping out a plan early on will not only help with subject selection/pathway decisions but also it can provide a motivator for classes in Semester 2 of 2023.

UNIT 3&4 STUDENT LEARNING CONFERENCES

After feedback from several students, parents and teachers, we have created a specific set of Student Learning Conferences for our Year 12 students or students in Year 11 completing a Year 12 subject.

The main aim of these conferences is to allow for feedback from the teacher after Unit 3 mid-year exams, reports and the start of Unit 4. This feedback is given sooner than previous years to allow it to be heard and actioned by the student in a faster and more effective manner. In most cases, students have not completed any SAC’s or started their large SAT yet and therefore, this is a crucial time to change a habit, learn or tweak a new skill or simply be a motivator for the final push.

It is imperative that all Unit 3 and 4 parents/carers attend with their child in person. The details are listed below:

4pm-7pm Thursday 27th July 2023

Location: Coffey Building (Clyde North Campus) & Tarraville Building (Cranbourne Campus)

If you have still not received your booking information (logins, website and passwords), please contact College Reception at your relevant campus ASAP. Where you are not able to make this time, I recommend you contact the teacher directly for another time for a face-to-face meeting, Zoom meeting or at least a phone call.

Research by John Hattie has shown that intervention and feedback in a timely manner is proven to have one of the largest impacts on student outcomes and I hope you will join us on this afternoon/evening.
