Introducing Ms.Chieu, graduate of 2018!

Ms.Chieu has made her way back to Keysborough College, working at Banksia campus as one of our junior school English teachers. Let’s hear her story….

Were there any teachers who inspired you to pursue a career in education?

There were definitely teachers who inspired me to pursue a career in education. I was fortunate enough to have a very positive high school experience and the teachers I had definitely contributed to that. Especially during VCE when stress levels were at an all time high, it was my teachers that took the time and effort to reassure me and pushed me to achieve all that I did.

What made you want to become a teacher?

As I had very positive experiences with my teachers and was able to form good relationships with them, I then also wanted to become someone that was a positive influence to an individual, whether that be academically or socially.

Why did you choose to teach at Keysborough?

As mentioned, as a student I only really had good experiences and memories at Keysborough. Looking back, I can now appreciate how diverse and accepting the college was and still is, and that is probably a factor as to why I enjoyed and felt safe coming to school every day. Hence, why I chose to teach at Keysborough, because of the great community the school has built and maintained.

What stories do you have from Keysborough that you remember?

Although there are many, the fondest memories I remember were from my final year as a student at Keysborough. Because the cohort had a mutual awareness that this is our final moments together with everyone, we really came together as a cohort and made sure every event was a memorable one, from organising formal to rehearsing “In My Feelings” by Drake for our final assembly.

What things have changed in teaching methods compared to your time learning here and now teaching?

I can’t say much has changed compared to my time learning at Keysborough and now. Teachers are still very caring and look out for students’ wellbeing in whatever way they can. However, I don’t see teachers making students do push ups anymore when they swear…

Do you teach the subjects that you wanted to teach or studied?

As a student, my aim was to become a teacher that specialised in English and psychology. I achieved my goal of becoming an English teacher but unfortunately, psychology was under the science faculty at university and I’ve never been a science girl, so I opted for humanities instead.
