MODEL UN

On the 17th of May, a group of year 10 and year 11 students from Acacia campus attended the Access Monash model United Nations event at the Monash clayton campus. Students were able to act as delegates for their country and work with other nations to solve problems and face national challenges in relation to the set goal of eliminating world hunger. Keysborough college students represented Canada and South Korea. The event is centered around submitting and discussing amendments to the resolution draft, a document that outlines how all member states are to act and move forward in achieving the set goal. The general assembly meeting is a chance for delegates to represent their country by proposing amendments to the draft, discussing, and debating with other nations. Between sessions students were given a presentation in the Monash Moot court on law degrees at Monash university and the range of study opportunities.Team South Korea proposed an amendment to the draft resolution that rephrased a call to action for a greater reliance on plant-based diets to that of one with more lenience for underdeveloped countries who may rely on meat for export or do not have the land and infrastructure in place to cultivate crops. The amendment was seconded by India and Australia, as we’d already formed alliances with them in previous sessions. In the end, this amendment was approved by the final vote. The event was exciting and inspiring, we look forward to entering more events and competitions with more teams to broaden our schools involvement in extra-curricular activities.

YEAR 7 BANKSIA HOUSE ACTIVITES

In lieu of Athletics being cancelled, year 7’s  participated in House Activities. Year 7 students gathered in their house groups to complete a series of challenges to compete for house points.

Some of the activities included Capture the flag, dodgeball, discuss toss, a relay race and tug of war. We also played trivia in the morning, the teachers were so impressed at how many groups were able to identify a range of different flags around the world.

The Tug of War was a highlight as all the students put in lots of effort and it was very funny when they fell over.

A big thank you to Mr Htut and Ms C for organising the activities. We were so appreciative that last minute we could still do something really fun.

ACACIA YEAR 12 PSYCHOLOGY CLASSES VISIT MONASH SLEEP LAB

Did you know that if you live until 75yrs, 25 of them are spent asleep? Sleep has been our Unit 4 focus in Psychology this term. In the classroom we learnt about REM and NREM sleep, the stages of NREM sleep and brain wave patterns, including how to measure changes that happen to us while we are asleep!  Now it was time to look at scientists at work in the Monash sleep clinic, using their technology to examine sleep.  We discovered the reason for sleep paralysis and how shift work messes with our circadian rhythm.

Anthony a very sleep deprived Keysie student volunteered to get hooked up to EEG, EMG and EOG devices, then try to fall asleep in the sleep lab’s comfy bed, while the rest of us watched the monitor in anticipation of a change in brain wave patterns.  Anthony shocked all of us, including Luke, the sleep scientist by falling asleep in minutes and going straight into REM sleep, indicating a very sleep deprived person experiencing REM rebound effect, who definitely needs to catch some more ZZZZ’s. It was a great day and brought our classroom learning in Psychology to life!  Big thanks to Mrs. Hughes and Ms. Komljenovic for organising our excursion.

It was a tough 3 days for both teams, they had to be school around 7:30  and didn’t get to get home till 9pm at night. I am so proud to coach both of these teams, they were so suportive toward each other and really did our school proud. COLLEGE PRODUCTION

This year I have had the pleasure of directing and producing the college production of Aladdin Jnr.

It’s no secret that many industries were negatively affected during Covid and the impact of lock downs hit our performing arts students hard. That’s why this Production of Aladdin junior has been so special. It’s been 4 years since the students of Keysborough College have been able to sing, dance and rehearse together for a full musical, and they have done an outstanding job!

Students have attended two rehearsals a week since week 5 in Term 1 and have demonstrated the college value of excellence through their dedication and stamina and we couldn’t be more proud.

Productions like this are so important for our students. During the rehearsals and throughout the performances, they learn valuable skills and create life long memories. In this environment, students collaborate, problem solve, develop leadership skills and learn from one another in ways that shape who they are. We have watched each of them grow in confidence and embrace new friendships across year levels and campuses.

The cast and crew have created something extraordinary for their community through their outstanding work ethic and talents. The production team congratulates all students involved for their dedication and talents!

Watch this space for more performances happening in 2024…

VM LITERACY CITY EXCURSION

Recently the Year 11 Vocational Major Literacy students from both Acacia and Banksia campuses engaged in a City experience as part of their current learning exploring social issues. The focus was centred around a visit to the ‘Big Issue’ a non for- profit organisation that assists homeless people to find employment, housing and make meaningful and supportive connections.

The Big Issue Classroom is a learning experience that provides students with real-life insights into homelessness and disadvantage. They were also required to participate in small groups in an interactive task called The Big City Search. They were given instructions and clues for a problem- solving challenge where they moved around the city exploring issues related to homelessness such as access to transport, services, healthcare and income.

The day concluded with a free visit to ACMI which is in Federation Square.

Thank you to the staff and students in attendance.
