Sports News

Our students and staff have been busy representing St Augustine's at sporting events recently.  Here are some reports from Mr Hill about what they have been up to.

Year 7 Boys Loddon Mallee Badminton

The Year 8 badminton team consisting of Max S, Cooper W, Charlie P and Ethan G, hit the courts in Eaglehawk. The boys faced some stiff competition and had to work for every point in our opening two matches. CMC and Kerang consisted of some stand-out players and they ran out comfortable winners. Our third game against Marist College was more even. The boys had worked on their craft throughout the day and were starting to hit their straps. There were some close finishes in the singles events and Ethan won our first match of the day 24-22. The doubles games were also very close but unfortunately, we were on the wrong end of those as well. The team provided their best efforts all day and improved as the day went on. Thanks to everyone who made the day possible.

Year 8 Girls Loddon Mallee Netball

The Year 8 netball team (pictured in our banner photo) made their way to Golden Square earlier this term. The girls' first game was against Charlton and we were able to kick the day off with a convincing 50 – 4 win. Throughout the game our goalers were strong and accurate and they were well supported by our defenders who got a lot of rebounds and provided us with many opportunities in attack.

Our second game was a tougher affair, losing to Mackillop by 5 goals in a tough encounter. All the girls tried their best and played well but unfortunately, it wasn’t enough. One win and one loss in our group took us into the third place play-off. In another tough game, the girls were able to come out on top with a very tidy 39 – 28 win over St Joseph’s Mildura. It was a great team performance and a well-deserved win to finish the day. Thanks to Sandy for coaching the team for the day, Grace for coming to do the umpiring and all the mums who came to support the team and helped out with the scoring. It is very much appreciated!

Thank you to parent, Kathryn Simpson, for the photos below.

Year 8 Boys Loddon Mallee Soccer

The boys ventured off to Moama for the second year running to try and progress through to the State finals.

The first match against BSE was fiercely contested. BSE controlled most of the play but we were able to hold steady in defence and breakthrough for a couple of shots on goal. The second half opened up much more with plenty of attacking runs from both teams. After pushing through the defence, Priesty was able to put a cross in to Mitch who deflected the ball into the bottom corner. 1-0 St. Augs! With six odd minutes to go the boys attempted to ’park the bus’. Unfortunately, BSE were able to zig zag their way through our defence and equalised with 2 minutes to go. 1-1 was the final score.

With no bye throughout the day, we were straight into our next match against Chaffey College. This team played a very different style to the first team and we took some time adjusting to this. Wil Harrison in goals was all over everything and our defensive line held strong. Late in the first half Priesty broke onto a through ball and kicked truly to give us the early lead. Chaffey bounced back in the second half and scored to tie things up. Both teams pushed for the winner and with the last play Chaffey created a scoring chance. Cyrhil put in a desperate sliding tackle to stop the shot but conceded a penalty as the final whistle went. Luckily for us, the intimidating figure of Wil in goals put the Chaffey player off who sent it flying over the crossbar. Another draw 1-1.

Knowing a big win was needed in our last match up against Girton Grammar the boys went all out attack from the get-go. Within 35 seconds of the game beginning, Dippa danced through the defence to slot the first of the match. Ten minutes later, Priesty slotted a penalty to send us 2-0 up and with it all to play for. As the game progressed, we slowly started running out of steam. Girton kicked 2 goals to equalise and took the lead with about 5 minutes remaining. Final score ended at 4-2.

The boys have shown great improvement from last year and were highly competitive all day. We are looking forward to seeing what next year brings as they move into the Intermediate competition.

9/10 Boys Football

The Years 9/10 Boys Football team made their way to Echuca in Week 2 of this term. Our first game was against Rochester and we didn’t waste our time getting amongst the goals. Lachlan C snapped truly from the pocket early on and the boys didn’t look back. Jed T was lively up forward and Jimmy H provided some dash off a half-back flank. The boys ran away winners 40 -18.

The second game against Echuca College was a tougher match but our back line consisting of Cooper L, Brody T and Dylan P were as solid as a rock. Hunter F must have smelt because no one wanted to go near him and Ollie M provided plenty of speed. Riley kicked the goal of the game, making a snap from the boundary look very easy. We ran out winners 37 – 13. With two wins to our name, we were off to the 1st place play-off against the top of the other group, St Joseph’s Echuca. Unfortunately, we were stopped in our tracks by a well-drilled outfit. With bigger bodies all over the ground, coach Zane Sutton was all out of ideas and was seen visibly flustered inside the coach's box. The boys did very well to make it to the playoff game and they represented the College in good spirits. Thanks to everyone who made the day happen and well done to all the boys.
