VCE Biology - Semen Laboratory Practice

Last week the year 11 Biology cohort were treated to an unusual practical within the genetics and inheritance area of study – morphology and mobility study of pig semen.  Due to time constraints with handling the precious sample, students had to complete the practical during their own lunchtime – with some excellent results as you can see in the pictures.

Well done to Ollie McColl and Ruby Marks who created exceptional specimen slides to show morphology very well.

Only 1 other school in Victoria has done this practical so far this year – well done students!

Jabberwocky Art competition

During Term 2 students had the opportunity to entry the Jabberwocky Art Competition. This competition was an extra curricula activity for students to work on during lunch times or at home.

Inspired by Lewis Carrols' poem from 1871 that was published in his novel, “Through the looking glass." Students could choose any materials to create an artwork to enter. The size requirement for the task was A3 or smaller. We had some wonderful entries proving that Mirboo North has some very creative artists. The overall winner was Lily Knabe from Year 7. Her entry showed advanced artistry with particular talents in blending colours and adding finite details.

Congratulations Lily on your win, we look forward to seeing the amazing works you create in the future.

Mirboo North Community Op Shop

The Mirboo North Community Op Shop provides a great opportunity for community groups to raise funds for their cause. Recently it was the Colleges turn to operate the Op Shop and we were once again wonderfully supported by volunteers from the school and wider community.

Like some other user groups, we struggle to fill shifts in the shop and are very appreciative of the support and generous time given by parents, op shop volunteers and college staff who give up their time to help us in this annual major fundraiser for the school.

This year we raised $2,134.42 which will go towards replacing some classroom furniture for our students.

Now a firm tradition, the Op Shop helpers were treated to a ‘cuppa and cake’ at Lamezleighs Café and was enjoyed by all who could attend.

The College would like to thank all who helped support us in this successful fundraiser: Vivian, Jeff, Denise, Bev, Kylie and Julie, Jacqui and Anne M, Jan, Mel, Ange, Kate, Rachael O, Sandra, Rachael W, Vaya and Anne B.
