Science

This week in Science:

This week in science we have been exploring how people use science in their daily lives by investigating the science behind how RAT’s work.

We have looked inside a RAT cassette (clean of course!) and discovered the special filter paper or chromatography paper inside. This paper is what makes the test work, and so we examined the paper in more detail.

Years 3/4 and 5/6 experimented with filter paper and textas.  They drew a large spot of texta onto the end of the filter paper and then dipped the end of the paper into water. As the water travelled up the paper (via a process called capillary action) the texta ink was carried with it, separating it into its different colours.

Foundation, 1’s and 2’s investigated the action of filter paper and water with skittle lollies. The skittles were placed on the filter paper and water dripped on top. They discovered how the water carried the food dyes from the skittles through the paper.
