Year 2 Term Overview

Wominjeka Year 2 Families!

This year we have eight Year 2 classes and the teachers are:

2A - Larissa

2B - Stephanie

2C - Rachael

2D - Samantha

2E - Skye

2F - Caitlin

2G - Kimberly

2H - Alexandra

We are so excited to see how each child learns, grows and succeeds over this year.

As a cohort we have been spending the first few weeks of the term setting our classrooms up for success, we have been exploring the DCC expectations and values, establishing routines and structures while building our sense of community. It has been fantastic to watch the children connect and become a group of learners together as one.

Term 1 Curriculum:

Reading

This term in reading, Year 2 students will develop their reading skills through decoding (solving words), fluency (noticing and using punctuation to make meaning) and engaging with a range of comprehension (understanding) strategies. Students will identify the differences between fiction and non-fiction texts, infer reasons for character change (feelings and traits), make connections by comparing and contrasting amongst books in a series, as well as talk about the important information in an organised summary after reading, ensuring to select the information that is most important. Furthermore, to support the development of reading, students will engage in daily guided reading sessions, reading conferences, buddy reading and independent reading.

Writing

This term in writing, Year 2 students will develop an understanding of themselves as a writer, they will explore how writers construct personal recounts to share an experience or event with others. Students will have the chance to complete experiences within the school environment which will be used to ignite their passion for writing. We will continue to explore how to develop well-crafted sentences that share complete ideas and have the correct punctuation, form letters correctly, use paragraphs, record sounds in the unknown words while being taught how to add personality to their writing through their voice.

Mathematics

This term in maths, Year 2 students will be asking open questions to collect, represent (lists, tables and picture graphs) and interpret data (information). Your child will learn how to tell time to the quarter hour, use a calendar to identify the date and order the months and seasons of the year. Later in the term students will find the total value of simple collections of Australian notes and coins, draw two-dimensional shapes and identify their features as well as explain the effect of one-step transformation (slide, flip, half turn, quarter turn). Students will also represent multiplication and division by grouping and dividing collections into halves, quarters and eighths. Every week your child will engage in problem solving lessons whereby students apply their maths knowledge and skills to solve real world problems. Place value will be a core focus area throughout the whole year. This term students will be focusing on counting to and from, and ordering numbers up to 1000, performing simple addition and subtraction problems using a range of strategies and recognising increasing and decreasing number sequences involving 2’s, 3’s, 5’s and 10’s.

Inquiry

This term in inquiry, Year 2 students are exploring the question, what do I need to be healthy? Students will engage with a range of activities that will allow them to develop personal strategies and preferences to be safe and healthy at home, school and in the community. As well as investigate a variety of ways to be safe and healthy and apply their new knowledge of health to everyday life.

Ways to Help Your Child At Home:

Home Reading - We have started our Home Reading program. The expectation is for your child to read their take home book 5 nights a week, answer some comprehension questions that an older family member asks them and record the title, date and a comment in the yellow reading journal themselves. Take home books are for enjoyment and for your child to practise their reading strategies, and are not meant to be a challenging task for your child. In addition to the Home Reading program, Wushka and Reading Eggs are extremely valuable resources to help your child practise their reading.

Learning Goals - Your child’s individualised learning goals are listed on Compass (starting at the end of Week 5). There is a reading goal, a maths goal, a writing goal and an Inquiry or SEL (Social and Emotional Learning) goal for your child. Please read these and support your child by going through the suggested strategies to help at home. These goals are changed every five weeks (twice a term), and you will also be informed of your child’s achievement of these goals.

We look forward to working with you and your child this year. Please come and see your child’s teacher if you have any questions or concerns. After school is best for a quick chat, otherwise send your child’s teacher an email (via Compass) to set up an appointment time for a longer chat.
