Mandarin Program Overview

 

Prep

During Term 1, Prep students are learning to greet teachers with “ni hao (hello)”. They will learn some common greeting phrases through songs and interactions with the teacher, such as “xie xie ni (thank you)” and “dui bu qi (sorry)”. They are learning about some folk stories related to the Chinese Spring Festival. They will also learn about Panda, China’s national animal, and their habitat. 

 

Year 1

During Term 1, Year 1 students will learn to introduce their names using “wo jiao…(my name is…)” and comprehend the question “ni jiao shen me ming zi? (what is your name)?”. They are learning about some folk stories as well as the traditions related to the Chinese Spring Festival, such as the “hong bao (red packet)” and the lucky symbols and charms. They are reviewing the classroom instructions in Mandarin and a few topics that they learned last year, such as interacting with their teachers with “ni hao ma? (how are you?)”.

 

 

Year 2

In Term 1, students learnt how to great happy Chinese New Year 2022, and say the Year of Tiger in Chinese. We were also focus on transition from class to class safely, following instructions and set up rituals. Reinforce classroom language in Mandarin class. students are going to learn to sing Chinese New Year song. 

 

Year 3

In Term 1, students learnt how to great happy Chinese New Year 2022, and say the Year of Tiger in Chinese. We were also focus on transition from class to class safely, following instructions and set up rituals. Reinforce classroom language in Mandarin class. Students are going to create a postcard for their imaginative pen pal, and they are going to introduce about themselves in Mandarin.

 

Year 4

In Term 1, students learnt how to great happy Chinese New Year 2022, and say the Year of Tiger in Chinese. Students are going on a virtual trip to China, they are to come up with relevant questions and statements on the language they need to travel to China.

Student learns about the pictographs writing system understand how Chinese writing system are mostly influenced by the nature.

 

Year 7

During Term 1, Year 7 students will consolidate the fundamentals in building their language skills. They will learn about the features of Chinese characters (the writing system), and Pinyin (the sound system of Mandarin). They are learning to introduce their names and preferences through interactive games with their classmates. They will learn to tell the date and describe their feelings. In the first two weeks, they discussed about the Chinese New Year celebrations and experienced making “yuan xiao”, a traditional new year’s food, from scratch. They will compare the school structures in Australia and China, and learn the words and phrases that are frequently used in the classrooms.
