Learning How To Learn

The traditional idea of learning only taking place in the classroom has been significantly challenged in the last two years. Students have learned from home, on the dining room table, on the farm and in and out of lockdown. As educators we encourage our students to learn for life, that it to adopt the habits and focus that allows them to effectively learn no matter where they are.

This year as we celebrate learning in the 150th year of the College, we draw your attention to learning how to learn and invite you to partner with us. Students, teachers, and parents make a formidable team.

We encourage you to help your son or daughter to be accountable for the decisions they make as they learn each day. It is important that they honour the learning environment and the preparation that has gone into each lesson by arriving to class on time, by standing to greet the teacher as the lesson commences, by being organised and having the correct books and materials and all digital devices away unless invited to open the laptop.

The Student Record book is a vital learning tool. It is used by students to aid organisation and help them document what they have learned in class, how they will consolidate learning at home and when important work tasks and assessments are due. The teacher and mentor use the Student Record book, in conjunction with email to communicate home. Please ask to see the record book each week and sign the weekly page view. If your child has not met the class and learning expectations, we will let you know with a message or demerit in the Record Book.

You might like to initiate a conversation about your child’s learning by using some of the questions our teachers and mentors will use this year with our students.

What did I learn today?

How did I contribute positively to the learning of others?

What did I learn about myself today?

These questions encourage reflection and help to open discussion about learning.

This year we will remind our students that a successful and positive classroom requires commitment from them. This approach is summarised in the statement below:

In our classrooms we communicate responsibly with each other, we collaborate and work with the teacher and other students to enhance our knowledge and skills, we maintain a positive and engaged learning environment and our behaviour and words are respectful of others.

We hope to offer more opportunities for parents to get involved in their child’s learning journey.
