Mathematics

Welcome to Mathematics at Rangeview!

Last year we included lots of ‘family problem solving’ activities, Maths Curriculum Guides by Year Level as well as other fun games and links to puzzles and games the whole family can play. This week we include tips for our F-2 families on ways to engage children in a ‘week of Maths’ at home. For all F-6 families we have included a game called NIM 7 that can be played at home and with everyday objects. Please enjoy!

FUN FACT #1: “Forty” is the only number that is spelt with letters arranged in alphabetical order.

FUN FACT #2:  ‘Four’ is the only number in the English language that is spelt with the same number of letters as the number itself.

F-2: FAMILY MATHEMATICS

Maths Every Day

The below activities aim to engage our younger students with everyday Mathematical language and concepts. They also provide wonderful opportunities for our younger students to explore Mathematics in a real word context – what better way! We hope you and your children enjoy these ideas and take some photos of their new discoveries. Please send photos to the school office and we can include in the next newsletter. (Photos can be emailed to rangeview.ps@education.vic.gov.au).

FAMILY GAME TIME

NIM 7

A fun quick and easy game for two players. Please click this link https://video.link/w/zQfzc to learn how to play. Small objects like coins or Lego pieces can be used instead of counters. Instructions are also listed below for play with 7 counters.

Play several times so that you get a good 'feel' for the game. Are there any points in the game, before the end, when you know who the winner is going to be? How do you know?

Can you find a way to play so that you are sure you will win right from the start?

Does it matter who has the first turn? Why or why not?

NIM is an ancient game that has many variations. You might like to try:

  • Increasing the number of objects.
  • Decide on whether you take 1 or 2 items, or 1 or 3 items for larger collections.
  • Try playing with 3 or 4 players and more counters. How does this affect the game?
