Athletics

Our athletes have had a full competition schedule this term starting with the St Mary's Athletics Carnival on Wednesday 3 August.

We had a great turn up of students and a wonderful combination of competition and fun!

Our Age Champions are pictured below and the House winner was McCauley.

The Armidale Diocesan Secondary Schools Athletics was held at Tamworth Regional Athletics Centre on Friday August 26. St Mary’s College students performed outstandingly well on the day with eight school records broken, many of them set thirty to forty years ago.

Fourteen students made it through to the NSWCCC Athletics held at Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre on Monday September 12.

Many students also achieved personal bests on the day. Individual Age Champions are still to be finalised once all the results have been processed but it is likely that there will be several St Mary’s College students named as Age Champions.

Thirteen students from St Mary’s College represented the Armidale Diocese at the NSWCCC Athletics Championships held at Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre on Monday September 12.

The quality of competition was very high with six school records being broken, six medals won plus an individual age champion named.

Congratulations to Ruby Clayton on being named the 12 Girls NSWCCC Athletics Age Champion winning a total of four medals and setting three new school records. Ruby won a gold medal in the long jump 4.63m [school record], bronze in the 200m 28.25 seconds [school record], bronze in the 400m 1:08.16 [school record] and bronze in the 80m hurdles 15.41 seconds.

Bella Sawyer won a gold medal in the 15 Girls high jump clearing 1.65m. She also won a bronze medal in the long jump setting a new school record with a leap of 5.00m.

One of the most pleasing aspects of the team was the number of students completing personal bests and finishing in the top ten in their event.

Kennedy Cup

The Kennedy Cup Final was held during our PACC period.

Sadly Mercy bowed out in the first round being defeated by Loreto.

The second semi saw McAuley knock out Lourdes to progress to the Final.

The hotly contested Final was so close it went to extra time and a player drop off!

After some controversial calls Loreto were victorious! Congratulations Loreto!

Armidale Secondary Schools Basketball

St Mary’s College had four teams competing in the Armidale Secondary Schools Basketball tournament played at Tamworth Sportsdome on Friday September 9.

The Year 7/8 Girls, Year 9/10 Girls, Year 7/8 Boys & Year 9/10 Boys teams were prepared by Miss Greet, Mrs Law and Mr Carlyon.

Training was difficult due to the lack of access to basketball courts but once a week over many months the students would go across to St Xavier’s Hall to train during lunchtime.

All four teams experienced success on the day winning more games than they lost but unfortunately McCarthy Catholic College Tamworth proved too strong in all divisions.

NSW Inland Regional Netball Finals

The Stage 4 and 5 boys and girls Netball teams travelled to Tamworth on 14th September to compete in the NSW Inland Regional Netball Finals.

They faced some fierce competition, and walked away with a mix of wins and losses. Despite this, all our teams put their best foot forward in sportsmanship and effort and did SMC proud!

NSW Horse Sports Exhibition in Coonabarabran

Last term, two students from the Armidale Diocese went to compete at the NSW Horse Sports Exhibition in Coonabarabran. They competed in a wide variety of horse events and showcased their talents. Both students placed in the majority of their events, and we were lucky enough to take out the award for 'Best Presentation for Small Schools' at the Grand Parade which featured schools from all over the state.

St. Mary's student Rebecca Wilson achieved the amazing result of '17 Girls' Division Champion', as she competed and placed highly in a number of events over the weekend.

Congratulations to both students on their amazing accomplishments.

Sadly students were unable to compete in the Willowtree Public School Horse Sports last week due to wet weather.
