Year 11 Maths

Maths students are beginning to make use of our new Maths/STEM facility on offer at PRSC. Students in Year 11 Maths Methods were able to use the interactive whiteboard and the class set of wireless CAS calculators in an exploratory lesson on Calculus.

All EXCEL students recently sat the ICAS Maths tests. This test allows our most capable students to be extended by competing against other like-minded students in problem solving and applying maths. Students from other classes were also invited to participate. Results will be available in term 4.

VCAL visit Guide Dogs Victoria

On the 22nd August, both Year 11 VCAL classes went to Kew to visit Guide Dogs Victoria to learn more about the support they offer. When we arrived, we had a presentation from a Guide Dog Mobility Instructor who explained what the guide dogs and the clients do during their training, how it all works, how they raise money as they get less than 10% of their budget from the Government. She then took us around the training facility for a tour where we saw the puppies, kennels, obstacle tracks and their cleaning rooms. I learnt that each litter of puppies is given a letter of the alphabet and also it takes two years and over $50,000 to breed, raise, train and match a suitable Guide Dog with a person with impaired or no vision.

The thing I enjoyed most was getting the opportunity to walk with one of the guide dogs blindfolded around their training track.  It felt like the dog was dragging me and going really fast but it was actually going really slow. I found this visit an interesting and eye opening experience.

VCAL working Bee at Carrum Bowling Club.

This term the Year 11 VCAL students have been helping in the local community with two working bees at the Carrum Bowling Club. Jobs included moving furniture, building racks, landscaping and painting, with students working alongside the members of the club which we really enjoyed. We ended the days by playing a few ends of bowls. At first I found the game quite challenging, but by the third or fourth roll I had improved significantly. It was such a privilege to help out and I hope we get a chance to do it again soon.

Year 12 Psychology Excursion

On Friday, the 25th August, the Year 12 Psychology cohort attended a Sleep Education Program at the Epworth Freemasons Hospital in East Melbourne.  This was a great opportunity for PRSC students to further consolidate their understanding of curriculum topics covered in class by participating in practical demonstrations, specifically, the use of sleep monitoring devices.
