Year 9 Visit to Monash University

On the 22nd of August, half of the Year 9 group caught the bus to Monash University in Clayton. It is such a large university that it has its own postcode. We learnt that over 75,000 students of any age go to this university and you can expect about 30,000 students per day to be on campus. When we first got there, we went into a lecture room and were told some of the courses people were taking and what percentage (50%) you needed to pass one of your subjects.

The University was not what I expected because I thought it would be so much smaller but it felt like its own little town. People can live on campus and get jobs at the food stores or other little places. It has its own gym, pool, ovals and even car parks; surprisingly, you can also hire bikes to get around. People can join clubs and every year they have a University Games competition held in different places around Australia.

There wasn’t anything I didn’t like but I think it would be a bit hard to find where your classes were being held because the university is so enormous. I think it’s pretty smart though that the Government pays for your courses until you earn enough money to start paying them back. It is a good idea because (unlike America) you don’t have to pay it up front and it’s much easier for people to get higher learning skills.

After we visited the University, we went to Braeside Park for a couple of hours. We had a sausage sizzle and played in the park. This was enjoyable because we got to go outside in the sunshine and relax. A lot of the students played 44 or tiggy and the others played football or frisbee. There were so many things to do. I really enjoyed the day.
