Lighthouse Project’s Jeftomson Careers event

Last week a group of Wanganui students had the privilege of participating in a ‘paddock to plate’ type event with JefThomson, the 2nd largest employer in our area (behind GV Health). Jeftomson grow apples and pears across orchards in the Shepparton area (as well as Harcourt). These orchards supply three of the largest supermarket chains with fresh fruit across the country. Students saw a range of careers in each step of the fresh fruit through to consumer chain. Production horticulture; fruit processing and quality control; packing & storage; logistics and transport; health and safety; automotive, refrigeration and engineering trades; finance, administration and human resource management all provide an amazing diversity of employment opportunities. Seeing facilities and processes that the public just don’t get to see as well as hearing proud staff talk about their business and their own careers was a wonderful experience for all. All the students had a fantastic time and enjoyed learning so much about a business and industry we didn't know much about. Wanganui Park can’t thank the staff of JefThomson and the Lighthouse Project, who organised and co-ordinated everything, enough.
