Principals Report

By Frank Catalano

Dear Members of the Glen Waverley Primary School Community,

I trust this newsletter finds everyone well and welcome to another exciting edition as we share news about our wonderful school.

Learning from Home (LFH)

As mentioned in the previous newsletter, as the days roll into weeks and weeks into months, it certainly appears that remote learning or LFH has become our new normal. At this stage it seems as if LFH will continue for the remainder of Term Three however I am yet to receive official confirmation from the Department of Education and Training (DET). Naturally I will disperse news as it comes in.

Once again, a sincere thank you to the entire Glen Waverley Primary School community for the manner in which you have embarked on LFH 2.0 as it has been wonderful to see the outstanding learning the children are completing.

Please continue to keep an eye on Compass for updates.

Newspaper Writing Competition

The Year 6 children in the Semester One English Innovation classes recently entered a newspaper writing competition and have produced an outstanding collection of articles that are filled with a myriad of interesting facts and stories. Please refer to Mrs Coffey’s piece for additional information.

2021 Enrolments

I would like to remind families with children who will be beginning school in 2021 that we are taking enrolments now and that they are also closing rapidly. I strongly encourage you to ensure you return your child’s enrolment form to Jenna, Kylie or Julie in the main office as soon as possible. Alternatively please email me at frank.catalano@education.vic.gov.au and I will send you an enrolment form.

We also ask that members of our school community assist us by informing any of their neighbours, family and friends of the enrolment procedures and direct them to, our website or my email address to obtain an enrolment form. Unfortunately due to the Covid – 19 restrictions, school tours are not possible, however please encourage them to contact me directly on 9802 9938 or via email.

Congratulations to Ms Singh

Currently the Department of Education and Training (DET) is running a series of advertisements enticing people to consider teaching as a career. I am very proud to report that Ms Trish Singh was featured in The Age newspaper on Saturday 23rd August. Below is a copy for your enjoyment:

Trish Singh, teacher and 'learning specialist' at Glen Waverley Primary School in Victoria

What do you do?

Before the bell goes, I make a point to be at the door, so I meet the students.

Each one of us greet each other in a unique way.

Throughout the day we will go through reading, writing, maths and they'll often have a specialist subject: either Mandarin, art or music or performing arts.

On Fridays at lunchtime I will often be out there with the children either playing handball with them or basketball – whatever game is their choice.

How long have you been a teacher?

This is my fifth year.

What first sparked your interest in teaching?

I have always been passionate about children from when I was a child. I grew up in a household where there was a strong family unit that valued education. My grandma was a kindergarten teacher and ran her own kindergarten in Fiji.

What do you like most about being a teacher?

As I child I loved going to school every day, and I still love coming to school every day.

I know what I'm doing is out of genuine care and a deep appreciation for education, and to know that there's a little 5-year-old and you taught their sibling who is now in year 9 who’s saying you made an impact is so surprising and really humbling.

What's the worst thing about being a teacher?

I love what I do, and I love all facets of it.

Did you have a different career before you became a teacher?

I started with psychology so my background’s in that, specialising in children. I then went on to do my master's degree in teaching at Melbourne.

I chose this path as I really, really love neuroscience and I love behaviours and cognitive therapy and thinking about or analysing thought patterns. This has now become part of my role as a learning specialist and I coach adults in their practice and refining pedagogy.

How transferable are your skills? Are there any other jobs you have done or that you could do using similar skills and qualifications?

I've always had a passion for the psychology and the thinking behind learning. Glen Waverley Primary School is part of the University of Melbourne’s Science of Learning Research Centre. This program looks more closely at how people learn.

The insights gained are being embedded in the social and emotional programs that we run to help the students and teachers learn more deeply and have a better experience.

What advice would you give someone who's thinking about being a teacher?

I encourage them to be incredibly persistent and resilient because it's also a profession where you may not see the outcome of what you're doing and planning for immediately. But know that you do make a difference. Just give it a go.

What personal skills do you need to become a teacher?

You need to take the time to reflect on your practice and yourself as a practitioner.

Keep thinking about the purposes of the learner or the child and what it is that you want them to walk away from the lesson understanding – and focus on that.

Thank you, well done and congratulations Ms Singh as it is wonderful that you have been featured!

Acknowledging the children’s efforts whilst LFH

As everyone would be aware, at our school we take great pride in acknowledging the children’s effort in various aspects of the learning and behaviour. Unfortunately LFH makes it difficult for me to distribute Principal Awards hence for the foreseeable future we will acknowledge the children who have been nominated for a Certificate of Success in our school newsletter.
