Live BioLab from KIOSC

Usually year 12 Biology students would be visiting KIOSC to take part in a lab where they genetically transform bacteria by inserting a jellyfish gene into them to make them glow. This year KIOSC ran a live version of the lab where students watched online and could perform a simulation of the experiment online.

The students prepared via an online rework module, were able to tune in and watch the live lab, expertly explained by Kat and ET from KIOSC, and then complete the rest of the lab in KIOSC’s learning management system, CANVAS.

Although this cannot replace undertaking a hands on experiment, the delivered live lab certainly helped students to contextualise the theory behind genetic transformation and also gel electrophoresis.
