EngGirls join live event with women in STEMM careers at NASA

On Tuesday 15 September, girls from Years 9, 10 and 11, were invited to join a live interview with three women from the Remote Sensor group at NASA. RMIT University invited the girls to attend as part of their participation in the Aitken College EngGirls program. The women from NASA shared about their career path, their successes, and the things they wish they had known when they were a student. It was inspiring to hear about the different pathways that a person can take to work in a STEMM career. As the quotes from the girls show, the women’s personal stories about their successes and how they responded to failure, provided the girls with helpful strategies for dealing with similar experiences in school and beyond.

Quotes from some of the girls who attended the event

This event had allowed me to see the journey that people have taken to get where they are. It also opens my mind to other STEMM jobs that you can take.

Abigail V - Year 11

I found the meeting very informative and showed great insight of being a female in STEMM. It also showed how determination and persistence can lead us to places we thought we were not able to reach because we are girls.

Sara M - Year 11

That was truly a fantastic event, thank you so much for inviting me! It was very interesting to gain an insight into the journey they [women] took to get to where they are today. It stood out to me how they had a goal from a young age and were able to turn that into a reality.

Kayla P - Year 10

I really enjoyed the NASA livestream as I learnt new perspectives on STEMM and further details for pathways in the future. The women shared great anecdotes on their personal stories and great ideas we can implement into school and life.

Sahana S - Year 9

This event has made me understand the different jobs available at NASA and what is required to achieve those jobs. It has inspired me to not always be disheartened when I receive a bad grade or do not understand a subject. I believe that if I had not joined EngGirls, I would not have had this opportunity. Attending the NASA live event is a learning experience that I am grateful for.

Alyssa G - Year 9

Attending the NASA live event was an extraordinary experience. I was very fortunate to listen to three powerful women. The presenters inspired me to look into a pathway in Mathematics and Science. I am very interested in pursuing the study of biomedical technology. I was influenced by what one of the women said about the journey of study and their transition into the real world. They also discussed the topic of not many women working in that field at NASA. They are looked upon highly and that they are treated the same as their male co-workers which is something I am very keen about. I liked how passionate they were about their jobs, which was very inspiring.
