Learning in Focus - Arts and Engagement.

Ms Tania Robinson

It has been proven that in difficult time’s art can serve as an outlet to help reduce stress and loneliness while providing opportunities for self-expression. With this in mind it is no surprise that during this global pandemic creativity has flourished. In a world where we are consumed with images, our job as Arts teachers is to help students find their artistic voice and develop their own unique aesthetic. During these extended periods of remote learning and in the absence of our usual bustling arts spaces it has been a challenge that I am proud to say both teachers and students have embraced. Student’s homes have become their studios and they have relied on easily accessible materials and familiar surroundings to create their artworks. Below is a small selection of some of the incredible images St John’s students have produced whilst in isolation. Our Performing Arts students have had to turn to the virtual stage for their classes this term. Whilst they have missed out on the opportunity to rehearse and perform with each other they have found new ways to develop their performance skills and interact with their peers. They have also spent time researching music and dance genres, famous actors and musical theatre. I congratulate and thank our Music, Dance and Drama teachers for the efforts they have gone to keep these students engaged.

In a disappointing year when so many events have been cancelled I am pleased to be able to announce that our much loved Talent Quest will proceed this year, albeit virtually. Students who auditioned back in Term 1 have been patiently waiting to see if they will get the opportunity to perform, so it is exciting that they will get that chance, just in a different form. There will be no live audience but there will still be the myriad of talented voices and dancers that we look forward to seeing each year.

TQ2020 will take place on the last day of term, a link to watch the show will be provided for everyone to enjoy from the comfort of their homes and in a first you will be able to vote for your favourite performances. We can’t wait to bring some entertainment and colour in to what has certainly been a very tough year for everyone
