YEAR 8 CAMPUS NEWS

THE LATEST NEWS AT MERCY CAMPUS...

As we hit the end of the third Term, it provides us with the opportunity just to see how much happens in the lives of our students over the course of the year. Over the past four weeks, Year 8 students have been able to experience a range of different learning experiences that help to shape their knowledge of the world around them and their place within this.

At the end of August, students in Year 8 as well as those in Years 7, 9 and 10 participated in the Dot.Com workshop run by Project Rockit. This workshop had a focus on how we communicate with each other and how we can all play a role in making sure that everyone is treated in a respectful and responsible manner. The feedback from our Year 8 students was fantastic and hopefully they took away some key messages about bullying and how they can make a change to how people respond to this.

Following the Project Rockit workshop, Year 8 students were involved in the Safer Bus Travel roadshow that has now visited the Mercy Campus over the past 3 years. With the amount of time that our students spend on buses both at and too and from school, this message about the legal and ethical responsibilities that the students have as bus travellers is important to receive and understand. A big part of the workshop is based around a series of unfortunate fatalities that Victorian student bus travellers have found themselves in and how they could have been avoided. Dr Michael Kennedy is an expert in this area and it is great to see the students really take home this message.

While these sessions have taken place outside of normal lessons, there has still been plenty happening in the classroom. All classes have recently planted seedlings that will grow vegetables for us to cook with at the end of the year in Integrated Studies. There are many benefits to growing you own food and hopefully all of our students get the chance to build on this moving forward before enjoying many yummy meals at the end of year. All students also participated in our Healthy Choices expo on Wednesday afternoon displaying the work that they have completed over the past three weeks. It is great to see how they have selected their own questions and used these to make sense of an issue relevant to them.

PROJECT ROCKIT - STUDENT REVIEW

Project Rockit, run by young adults, is a program to educate children and teens about the use of social media and how we can keep safe on it and prevent cyber bullying. This is a very important and serious message and needs to be passed on throughout all generations.

Project Rockit did an excellent job of getting the message across by putting it in an engaging, fun manner. They involved the audience by inviting kids up on stage for competitions, had a beach ball flying around the theatre at the start to excite us and really connected with us by using personal stories about them and others.

In conclusion, I believe Project Rockit was very influential and definitely taught every kid a what is normally a very serious topic, in a fun, appealing way for all.
