Intra-School Sport Wrap Up 2018

The intra-house sport program ran smoothly in 2018. The Year 9 students participated in a house competition every week, with the victors of this being Blackwood. The students were very competitive in this competition and always gave their best for their house. The 2019 house competition has already started and students are motivated to contribute to their houses.

The Year 10 students participated in a variety of sports that aligned with the SSV calendar. The students were very involved in the interschool program and this may be a result of the practice and confidence they developed through the intra-school program.

In VCE all students participated in sport and were exposed to a wide variety of sport in the Wyndham community.  The sports offered were ten pin, indoor cricket, indoor soccer, archery, lawn bowls, karate, dance, yoga, badminton, frisbee, touch rugby, tennis, basketball, netball, tabata and gymnastics. The aim of the program was to relieve stress and have fun with their peers.  Student feedback was very positive, overall I think the VCE program is a highlight of sport at SCHS.

During the exam period all Years 9-11 were sent off campus for sport. One of the highlights was inflatable world. It was a good way to round out sport for 2018.

Programming Challenge For Girls (PC4G)

Across the year, Cindy C and Krystal T of 9C1 developed their programming and animation skills at the University of Melbourne, using a programming platform ALICE. In the Final Challenge this Term, the girls won first place with their majestic eagle animation, tieing with another school’s hip thrusting animal dance.

& Selective Entry School "Hackathon"

On 29 and 30 November, 40 students from Suzanne Cory, Nossal, Mac Rob and Melbourne High competed in the first ever Selective Entry Schools Hackathon at the University of Melbourne. In this competition, students were tasked to design and pitch a business proposal to improve university retention rates. Currently, 30% of students drop out of university courses.

Over the two days, the teams worked with University of Melbourne Staff and Student Ambassadors to gain insight into the life of university students, and to develop their solutions. At the end of Day 2, every team pitched their idea to a panel of University Lecturers and Students.

Mac Rob won the Best Pitch Award with UNIverse, an app in which the student builds their galaxy by connecting with other students, attending university events, and completing subjects. This helps students become engaged in university life, seen through research to be a major contributor to successful university study.

SCHS team Tuni won the Ambassadors’ Choice Award, for engaging with the University of Melbourne Student Ambassadors. They constantly sought advice from the Ambassadors, asking questions to understand how university students think, and getting feedback on their concept and design, and pitch.

SCHS Sports & Athletics Results 2018

Congratulations to all students who competed in the SCHS Sports & Athletics program in 2018! SCHS was represented in every SSV sport this year! This is an incredible feat and we are the only school in the region to achieve this.

There has been so much participation this year in sport and lunchtime trainings have been great, with so much positive feedback from other schools and umpires. Lets build on this in 2019!!! In 2019 touch rugby and lacrosse will be added to the interschool calendar, so there's never been a better time to get involved in SCHS Sport & Athletics!

2018 Highlights

  • Aerosports - Karmil N and Mackenzie P qualified and competed at the National Aeroschools competition.
  • Futsal - We entered 3 teams into the futsal competition this year and from these multiple students were asked to trail for the state team. This was a successful inclusion to the sport program so let’s watch this space for the future.
  • Ultimate Frisbee - This year was the first year we competed in ultimate Frisbee and I’m sure we will continue to develop in this sport.

Well done to Sean G, Michael C, Peter H and William L on competing in the State 4x50m freestyle relay.

Individual Student Success

Well done Sophia A who competed in the State Cross Country and participated in the State Athletics in the 400m.

A huge well done to Aagaash M who won the State title in discus.

  • Golf- Cameron T and Izak W qualified and competed at the State Golf tournament.

Racket Sports

Badminton - We had 3 teams qualify for the WMR competition with the senior girls and intermediate girls narrowly missing out on State finishing runners up.

Table Tennis - Int girls table tennis competed at the state championships and we came runners up in 3 of the four WMR table tennis competitions

Tennis - The intermediate boys narrowly lost to MSA and can hopefully go one better next year!

Team Sports

Netball - This year the senior boy’s netball team qualified for the WMR competition which is a fantastic effort given the tough competition in the Wyndham region. A netball has not qualified for WMR in 5 years.

State Baseball - Our senior boy’s baseball team were fantastic this year and got the call up to compete at state as a wild care after narrowly missing out on qualifying through the WMR competition. Each year our baseball team keeps getting stronger and stronger so watch this space.

AFL - We had our first girls AFL win this year, which is outstanding considering last year we were unable to field a girls’ team.

Cricket - Inter boys cricket made wmr and just lost to msa by 6 runs.

Hockey - We defeated St Monicas and northern bay in the friendly round robin.
