Festival Of Music

Festival of Music

The Festival of Music is a school based music education program brought to you by the SA Public Primary Schools' Music Society and the Department for Education.

With its genesis in 1891 as the Thousand Voice Choir, our program has been an integral part of South Australian life and stands as an official State Icon.  The program reaches thousands of primary and secondary children annually and allows children opportunities to perform at prestigious venues, such as the Adelaide Festival Theatre.

Our Festival Choir will be performing at the Festival Theatre on Saturday, 22nd September 2.30pm – 4.30pm. We’d love you to come and support our choir in their big performance. Tickets are on sale now – so get in quick! All tickets cost $35 each. They can be purchased online www.bass.net.au, by phone 131 246, or from an agency.

One of the extra things that we can do in Year 5 - 7 is to join choir. The choir team is a group of students and of course our teacher Ms Barker. We have choir every Tuesday. We learn a group of songs for our performance in Term 3 at The Festival Theatre.

Our songs each have a different story, and as we sing we tell the story as well. Some of our songs include fun choreography, wonderful signing and heart-warming percussion that will guarantee a smile. Some of our songs are partially or fully written in different languages. This includes Djapana, Kusimama and Niina Waathangku? This year’s Festival Of Music theme is North Terrace, so we sing some songs about North Terrace, such as Cheesegrater, Prelude To North Terrace, The Institute and more. We hope you’ll be amazed by these songs, because we already are!

A part of the choir fun is also a responsibility. A lot of responsibility is put in when you are a choir leader. There are several reasons why you could be a good choir leader. Examples are being a confident singer, as well as respecting and getting along with others. As a choir leader you need to try to be the best leader that you can be. Choir leaders help set up the room ready for rehearsals. They sometimes lead the warm ups for the whole choir and they help out Mrs Barker with organisation and messages.

Along with choir leaders there are other once in a lifetime opportunities. One of them is being a host. This role means that you get to MC one night of the festival of music. To be a host you have to audition for the role. This is a very fun experience. Even if you don’t get the role, you get to work with people that run the festival of music and you get to work with other people that have the same interests as you.

In choir we have an amazing Year 6 student called Zian. She has made a incredible animation and put it into a competition for the Festival of Music. The song that the animation will go with is called Pure Imagination and she truly put a lot of her imagination into this fantastic piece of work.
