Screens have become such an integral part of our lives that we cannot live without them, and this can’t be truer for our teenagers. It is actually one of the most common questions I am asked as a teacher: how do I get my child off the screen? How much screen time is too much? Lockdown amplified the issues and concerns that come with too much screen time from negative social behaviours to risk taking and now many parents are struggling to claw back time for family, sport and schoolwork.

Adolescent psychologist Andrew Fuller has put together a list of ways to ease back the screen time and prevent melt downs over the change of rules or expectations.

‘Being without access to technology brings painful feelings for teens.

They report feeling lonely, upset or anxious.’

This article gives parents helpful hints and techniques on what not to do but also how to go about it in a gentle manner that will hopefully decrease the need for so many screens. Fuller argues the most important concept to reducing screen time is exactly that…time. So don’t rush into a full schedule change, instead introduce limits and changes slowly.

Semester Two Leadership Roles

Semester Two Captains and Interact members were presented with their badges at assembly this week. It is always a pleasure to congratulate young people who are taking on opportunities to be the voice for others and begin working on their leadership skills. Often, Class Captain and Sustainability Leader positions may inspire our students to work towards larger Dunhelen Captain and even College Captain roles in the future. These, along with the skills our students learn participating in the Interact Club, help them develop confidence and maturity, enabling students to feel empowered and accomplished.

Congratulations to the following Semester Two Class Captains and Sustainability Leaders and Interact members.

Middle School Play

The Middle School Play is an exciting opportunity for our Dunhelen students to shine on stage. For some it opens a door to a world they didn’t know existed and they find their tribe and confidence along the way. Being part of this co-curricular activity continues to be a highlight for students all the way through their schooling and will ensure fond memories and friendships.

This year the Middle School Play is Alice in Wonderland. The Year 10 Theatrecraft students will design and run the entire backstage process including set building, hair, make-up and costume design while our Middle Schoolers bring the play to life.

Keep an eye out on the school’s social media over the coming weeks for detailed information regarding purchasing tickets and supporting our students.

Congratulations to the very large cast.
