STEM Update

This Term has started with a real buzz in Science. Year 7 students are currently studying a Physics unit on Forces. To complement the learning objectives, classes have been doing many hands-on experiments. They have explored different types of forces, including, electrostatic, magnetic, gravitational, buoyancy and friction. Students are very engaged with the topic and, most importantly, are having lots of fun learning.

The STEM department is committed to offer our students opportunities for extension. This week, Years 11 and 12 students participated in the International Chemistry Quiz. This quiz allows students to apply the content and knowledge they have learnt in Chemistry in an interesting way. Some questions are designed to challenge students, but all are aimed to promote analytical thinking. The quiz has six divisions according to age and our students participated in the Senior and Final Age Division. Based on their performance, students are offered certificates of merit to acknowledge their efforts at Credit, Distinction and High Distinction levels.

Year 11 Biology have been studying Human Physiology and Homeostasis over Terms 2 and 3. Last week students participated in a dissection practical activity. They observed firsthand how blood flows through the heart by dissecting a sheep heart. Students also observed how several body organs work together to achieve homeostasis by investigating a pluck. This activity allows students to observe the relative positions of the trachea, lungs and heart. The lesson culminated with a rat dissection where the anatomy of the rat was examined in detail. Although students at times found this lesson challenging, it was an excellent experience to cement their knowledge of physiology.

Just a reminder that the STEM Fair for students in Years 4 to 7 will be happening on Friday 19 August. Further details regarding this event will be circulated soon.

Maths Society

The Clayfield College Maths Society is open to all students across Years 7 to 12. The aim of the society is to promote participation in maths competitions and to develop maths problem solving skills outside of the classroom in a way students will enjoy. Each morning a new problem of the day will posted, and the daily winner will be the first student to email the correct solution to Mr. Humphreys. In addition, news of maths competitions and upcoming events will be communicated through the Maths Society OneNote. Students interested in joining this society are encouraged to email Mr. Humphreys who will give them access to the activities.

Chess Club

The Clayfield College Chess Club meets every lunchtime from Monday to Friday in the Upper LRC. All students interested in chess are encouraged to join. The Club has both experienced players as well as beginners who have just started learning. Chess is an excellent way to develop logical reasoning and thinking skills and, when learnt young, it is a skill students keep all their life. At the College, we have a number of good-quality chess sets, including 5 Chinese Chess sets (Elephant Chess) and one Japanese Chess set (Shogi) for students to use.

Cultural Week

Spanish students took part in various activities to celebrate Cultural Week. Years 5 to 8 had fun taking a Zumba class on Monday morning. On Wednesday, the Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 students were able to get their faces painted by some of the Art and Spanish students in the Secondary School, whilst students in Years 3 to 6 enjoyed a Spanish film festival where they watched the movie ‘Encanto’. The Year 7 class tried some authentic Chilean food whilst Years 9 and 10 students enjoyed Peruvian alfajores and read about its culture. What a fantastic week!!

Lord Mayor's Young Environmental Leadership Network

The Lord Mayor's Young Environmental Leadership Network (LMYELN) proudly supports students and schools by empowering young leaders to create real change in their school community. Through a project-based, active learning model, students are empowered to create positive environmental change in their school and community. Student representatives attend five Council-facilitated meetings throughout the year that equip them with lifelong skills in project management, communication and leadership. Two of our Year 10 students, Sophie Lloyd and Ieyla McIvor, participated in this initiative. As part of their project, Sophie and Ieyla ran a whole school trivia game to raise awareness of global environmental challenges. This was followed by a clothing swap in the Chapel Courtyard, aimed at reducing textile waste.

Year 11 Business

The Year 11 Business class travelled to Fitstop Chermside to conduct a feasibility study for their Term 3 assessment task. Students heard about the business’s beginnings and the motivation of the business owners in purchasing a franchise model. The owners gave students a tour of their fitness studio and showed how a session is run. Students enjoyed the opportunity to see concepts learnt about in class applied in a real business situation.
