What's happening in the Middle Years...

Years 3 & 4 - Term 3

This term our students have been working on many interesting topics:

Literacy

In our Literacy activities we have been reading an exciting book called

“The 27th Annual African Hippopotamus Race” written by Morris Lurie.

Many activities and tasks  based on this book have included text annotation which involved making predictions about the text based on the front and back cover of this book.

Students have developed explicit character profiles and built a real appreciation of how   characters are built in and how important they are in a book. We have investigated the characters in depth. The book linked perfectly into our discussions around the Commonwealth Games and how much athletes work in their Sport.

Our next book ‘Walking in Gagudju Country”. We shall be-exploring the monsoon forest. This book is shortlisted in this year’s book awards.

In our handwriting we are developing speed loops.

Mathematics

Our focus has been on Measurement. Students have been learning about Telling the time and developing an understanding about how to read a Timetable. Students have also been busy estimating and measuring items. There has been a continued focus on the importance of learning multiplication tables, and short number facts, to enhance fluency in our Maths.

Religious Education

Our focus has been on the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Confirmation and the Eucharist.

Inquiry

Our Inquiry question is “What is a force?”

Students have been involved in class lessons to build our understanding of what is force. Following this, students create a balloon powered car which we all will  develop an area from what has been covered to build their own inquiry topic. This will involve developing questions to help organise their project.

Physical Education

Students are practising for the upcoming athletics sports.  The St. Brendan’s Athletics Carnival is on Friday, 2nd September.
