Smashed Performance

On Thursday, 28th July, the Year 10 Pathway students were invited to join the Year 8 cohort to take part in a special incursion. Ms Halsall organised a group of performers to visit the school to help bring awareness to the facts, causes and consequences surrounding alcohol misuse.

The Smashed performance is a safe space where students are encouraged to break the culture of underage drinking. The performance aims to reduce alcohol related harm among young people and to help young people develop responsible attitudes towards alcohol.

The Year 10 Pathways class took some time to reflect on their experience and below is a sample of what they had to say:

That Smashed performance was about drinking and being drunk, what can go wrong if you or another person is drunk and how easily you can get into fights or get injured. I learnt that underage drinking can affect brain development.

The performance taught us about the dangers of drinking at a young age and being drunk (including what can go wrong, such as: getting into fights, being sick, not being able to walk properly and fall over, you or others being vulnerable and the possibility of dying from alcohol poisoning).

The smashed performance was a play which taught us about the effects and consequences of drinking underage. I would recommend this performance to other students at ESC as it has important information about underage drinking and the outcomes of it. The program taught us that we shouldn’t let peer pressure force us into drinking alcohol. Zac Foxwell 10P

The Smashed incursion was a good learning experience. There were 3 people performing about drinking underage and how it can affect lots of stuff like mental health. We learnt that it is important to not drink at a young age. Owen Muarem 10P

The party scene was my favourite. The Smashed performance helped us learn about the law and underage drinking. I would recommend other students watch this performance. You shouldn’t drink until you’re 18 because it is against the law to buy alcohol if you are under 18. If someone sells you alcohol and you’re underage, then they can be fined.  Chloe Nelson 10P

A big thank you to Ms Halsall who always goes above and beyond to find fun and interesting ways to help engage our students while informing and delivering such an important message to our young community. We look forward to inviting the Smashed performance back to ESC in the future.
