Literacy @ ESC

Literacy is a major focus for Epping Secondary College in 2022 and teachers have been learning about and implementing a range of strategies to enhance student reading, writing, speaking and listening at all year levels. As a major goal in our strategic plan, supporting increased literacy levels will ensure that our students have the knowledge and skills to communicate effectively, but also engage with and develop their understanding of increasingly complex academic texts as they progress through their high school career.

To support visible reading strategies in the classroom, visual cues in the form of posters, such as the one below, are being displayed in classrooms as a reminder for teachers and students about the strategies to use when reading to support understanding when reading. Teachers in all learning areas are explicitly teaching these strategies with students and we encourage students to take these skills into their reading practices both at school and at home.

Students will, over time, become familiar with these strategies and we encourage parents and carers to ask at home not only about the content students are learning, but the transferable reading strategies that support reading in every subject. At ESC, we continue to build the literacy skills and knowledge of all learners, including those who need additional support with literacy through our tutor and Quickmart programs. Literacy is essential to engaging with the world and will continue to be a focus at ESC to ensure students are successful learners.
