The Power of Prayer

Lord, teach us to pray. The weekend's Gospel journeys through the power of prayer and how Jesus taught His disciples to pray. Ask, Seek, Knock are the key takeaways in Scripture guiding us all to follow the prayerful tradition taught to us in various ways.

We are given the Lord's Prayer which contains so much for us to learn.  A formal prayer that we teach our students. There are many other formal prayers such as the Hail Mary, the origins of which are determined in the Gospel of Luke, when the angel Gabriel greets Mary by saying, "Hail, thou art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women," (Luke 1:28). The Magnificat in Luke's Gospel also hints to the greatness of prayer as Mary's Hymn of Praise.

We teach our students both formal and informal prayers including prayers of petition, thanksgiving, worship and praise. Our students also write their own prayers and are active participants in creating the Prayers of Faithful for their class Masses. It is through these activities that we have the opportunity to recontextualise and create authenticity and purpose in prayer.

We pray with God at the centre, with perseverance and with trust in the goodness of God.

We recognise that prayer is not only encountered in times of need and challenge but also in times of joy and happiness.

Growing up and continued with my sons was the motto: 'A family who prays together, stays together'.  Never underestimate the power of prayer.

Not only does Jesus teach us how to do it right, but using the parable of the Friend at Midnight in the middle of His instructions, Jesus teaches us that we must have persevering prayer.
