Positivity from our Principal

At the Debutant Ball on Saturday night, where Principal Cottrell introduced and celebrated all the debutants, partners and young people

Dear students, staff, and families of Lalor North Secondary College learning community, As term two winds to a close, I wish to extend gratitude to all in our community for the dedicated hard work, persistence, positivity, and sense of belief in our shared goal to provide the finest possible education for our young people.

This is a broad and ambitious goal, and our students deserve nothing less. We are grateful to families for their support of their children to engage in learning, grateful to our educators for striving to create positive and engaging learning environments in collaboration with their colleagues, and, most of all, grateful to our students for their work to maximise attendance, engage with the learning program (and to support their friends in doing so), and for reaching out to the professionals in our college when they require assistance.

Winter Solstice and our shortest day of light

There are so many things to celebrate about this term. Our grounds seem to become more beautiful every day, while our buildings and facilities continue to receive timely maintenance and care…it has been fabulous to see students enjoying our sporting facilities at break times, engaging with our clubs, leadership opportunities, community outreach experience, library programs, before and after school programs, and enjoying the company of friends. This sense of community is really what a quality education is about because it amplifies the high expectations and opportunities of our instructional program.  All of us benefit from health and wellbeing to achieve our best, and I hope that we can take full use of the resources and connection our college provides to build our sense of belonging, positivity and achievement for the future.

With all the above, it is hardly surprising that our student survey data is showing very strong growth in positive feelings about school. We are committed to partnering with our students and families to maximise this excellent trend of engagement in learning.

Our many new teachers have become well-established in their connections with our students while benefitting from the experience and support of their colleagues. The college has hosted many student teachers for their practicum rounds from university - all of whom indicated that they would like to work with us one day. We are committed to play our part in enriching the teaching profession by providing this experience for our emerging professionals. We have continued to welcome guests from across our network – the many primary students (with their teachers), Departmental representatives, and many other community members. As a result of our efforts, enrolments continue to grow at all year levels as families understand the quality of the learning experience provided by our College.

Please take the opportunity to review student reports that have now been published, and spend time discussing achievements, strengths, and areas for further development with your children. We are thinking very much of our year 12s as they continue their assessments, revision and prepare for the remaining ‘marathon’ that lies ahead. Our very best wishes to you – you all know where to seek assistance. On behalf of School Council, Assistant Principal, Selen Atilla, Business Manager, John Bourikas, and all College staff, I wish our students and families a well-deserved, safe and refreshing break. Looking forward to welcoming you to Semester Two.
