World Environment Day

Yolande Grosser - Chaplain

A fabulous team of volunteers from across Horsham College worked together last week to mark World Environment Day.

With the theme of ‘Reduce Reuse Recycle’ the day also incorporated the school value of ‘Commitment – continually learning and improving’.  The celebration included a free lunch, upcycled display and prize draw.

Serving delicious and sustainable curried lentil and carrot soup, prepared by the VET Cookery students and their teacher Cat Clarke, the team of sixteen volunteers kept the traffic moving as they dished up food to hundreds of students dining in and taking away. Held throughout lunch time on Thursday June 8th, the cold weather ensured that hot buttered toast was even more popular than the warming soup!

The weather didn’t deter students from donating second hand books to upcycle at the next Chaplaincy Book Fair where they will be on sale for $1.  The opportunity to win a YETI Rambler drink bottle seemed a good enough encouragement for students to do the extra lifting as they carried more than 70 additional books to school to donate.  School Captain Harriet Overman, with the assistance of Vice Captain Jarrah Davidson, drew the winning ticket with Lacy Perry the lucky student who took home the popular navy YETI.  Congratulations Lacy!

Whilst dining, students were able to admire the upcycling work of Textiles students who had taken pre-loved items of clothing and redesigned them, creating new pieces. Completed under the direction of their teacher Tina Fitzgerald, the upcycled clothing included dresses, jeans, skirts, bags and toys.

The occasion, organised by Horsham College Chaplain, Yolande Grosser, also offered the free dress day theme of ‘Op Shop MET Gala’ which provided the chance for students to wear recycled clothing, with all the Op Shops in town carrying plenty of choice options.

Maybe a fashion parade of fabulous fashion could be incorporated next year?
