SUCCESS STORIES

PAST STUDENTS' MUAY THAI SPORT SUCCESS

Chloe Dickson (2008) & Denver Kan (2019)

Chloe Dickson, class of 2008, won her first professional Muay Thai fight earlier this year, at the Rebellion Muay Thai event at Melbourne Pavilion. After several successful amateur fights, Chloe was matched against a professional athlete who had previously fought in several winning battles and had spent a lot of time training in Thailand. On the big stage, Chloe successfully defeated her opponent in three rounds. Commentators were particularly impressed by her determination and use of knees. Her stamina and resilience were also commented upon.

Chloe found the sport of Muay Thai in 2019 and was immediately drawn to its history and traditions, which combines athletic skill with respect and discipline. Since then, she has been training hard, excluding a short period where she was pregnant and then raising her first child.

As well as developing her own skills and expertise, Chloe and her partner, have established their own Muay Thai gym in Caulfield South, Khaoboy Muay Thai. There, they have grown a strong community of members, including a teens program with several afternoon sessions each week. Several current McKinnon students attend their classes.

One of their regular members is Denver Kan, class of 2019. Denver has been training at Khaoboy since the beginning of this year and has joined their “fighters group”. He has competed in some interclub fights in preparation for his first amateur fight, which took place on Sunday 20 August. Denver won this fight, taking home his first winner’s medal.

His trainers have remarked upon his work ethic and desire to succeed. He is physically and mentally strong and throws powerful punches with his strong hands. This is just the beginning of Denver’s Muay Thai journey towards professional competitions.

Congratulations to both Chloe and Denver on their success.

NON-STOP SAILING SUCCESS

Augustas Buividas of Year 7 undertook an amazing feat of almost non-stop sailing which resulted in a win at NSW Youth Championship. He travelled alone and had not been away from his family for more than 10+ days before. We are all very proud of your amazing achievement.

SENIOR VAFA DIV 1 PREMIERSHIP SUCCESS FOR GLEN EIRA / OLD McKINNON FOOTBALL CLUB

After a massive season, the Glen Eira/Old McKinnon SC football team seniors won their VAFA Div 1 premiership at Trevor Barker Oval against Oakleigh 15.13.103 to 6.13.49 on Saturday.

Ten ex McKinnon alumni students played in the team and the game was attended by current and previous McKinnon SC students and teachers.

In the photo with the premiership cup is ex McKinnon SC students Joel Chilcott and Will Green who both played crucial roles in the premiership victory. Well done to all concerned.

GERMAN FOR THE FUTURE

McKinnon Alumni Daniel Ledda class of 2015, recently featured in an online profile for German for the Future which highlights among other things several young adults from Victoria and the ways in which learning German has enriched their professional or personal lives (or both). Daniel began learning German with us in Year 7, continuing through to Year 12.

Daniel went on to study German and Information Technology at Monash University, and thanks to Monash’s many links and agreements with institutions and organisations in German-speaking countries (the Study Abroad program) he spent a year studying at Munich’s old and highly esteemed Ludwig Maximilian Universität.

Daniel now lives in Munich and works as a software developer for a German company. Daniel is not the only former student of McKinnon SC to have developed a close affinity with a country where the language is spoken that they learned here at school; he is another example of the varied pathways and destinations that our students find their way into.

Well done Daniel, we’re proud of you!
