Fostering Young Readers:The Wonders of Small Reading Groups

Hello everyone!

Today, I am thrilled to share how we nurture our young readers through the efficacy of small reading groups. Reading is not just about words; it's about understanding and exploring new worlds. Small groups make this journey even more enjoyable and rewarding!

Across the school we have three different styles of small group instruction beginning in the next week or so:

Guided Groups: Guided groups bring students with similar reading strengths together to explore stories and non-fiction books under the guidance of a teacher. It boosts their confidence, word solving and comprehension skills.

Comprehension Strategy Groups: In comprehension strategy groups, students learn essential reading skills together, such as visualizing and predicting. These skills support the students to connect deeply with books. They also support the development of executive functioning skills.

Book Clubs:  Book Clubs are a special opportunity for students to choose a book they are interested in. These clubs encourage independent reading and provide a platform for students to share their thoughts with their peers. It's a wonderful journey where young readers explore their chosen books and discuss them together, fostering a love for reading and meaningful conversations.

We create these groups by carefully observing our readers’ progress, interests, and strengths. We also consider reading assessments and encourage students to pick books they are interested in reading. By doing this, we make sure that every reader finds joy in their reading journey.

Together in these small groups, we not only improve our reading skills but also make new friends and share our love for books.

Yours in Reading,
