Grade 1

Explore the Learning in Grade 1

Reading This term there will be a strong focus on comprehension of fiction and non-fiction texts. While learning about stories from the olden days, the students will focus on the characters, setting and the problem/complication. They will also learn about the main idea, key details and text features of non-fiction texts.

Book Week activities and celebrations are a much looked forward to event at BHPS and this will take place in week 8.

Writing The grade 1’s, will continue to focus on developing their understanding and writing of both fiction and nonfiction text. This term the students will learn how an imaginative narrative is developed ie: that there are characters, a setting, problem and solution. We will aim for the students to create their own published story at the end of the term.

Maths, students will be learning about a range of mathematical concepts within the three strands of Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry and Statistics and Probability.

They will learn to recognise and represent multiplication as repeated addition, groups and arrays.  They also explore telling time, location, transformation and developed their understanding of volume and capacity.

Inquiry The students will be investigating how children and their families lived in the past and compare that to their own lives now.  Excitingly we have an excursion to Sovereign Hill planned for the end of August which will give the children insight into what life and school was like in Australia during the 1800’s.
