REMINDERS:

HOMEWORK

Students do have homework to complete weekly, this will hopefully start some great routines for year seven and beyond. It is expected that students are reading each night. It is also expected that they practise their spelling words at least twice a week and complete some math's work once or twice a week, this could be on Essential Assessment completing their personalised 'My Numeracy' Goals (students know their details), or in the form of worksheets, or practise of our current topic.

Unfinished work from class will also start coming home for students to complete for homework.

DIARIES

Student diaries are to be at school every day, students use these to record their homework they have completed and their learning goals. It is another great routine for the students to be in in preparation for secondary school. Some students will need a little more assistance (or reminding) for this. It would also be great if you could have a look and sign their diaries at least once a week, so you can help monitor the work they are doing at home.

PREP & BABY PHOTO

Thank you to the parents who have sent through a prep photo and baby photo of your children. If you haven’t could you please send a photo of them from around prep age (doesn’t have to be exact). And one baby / toddler photo also. These photos will be part of the Graduation presentation at the end of the year. They can be sent digitally either to your child's teacher or directly to Sharna, sharna.renfrey@education.vic.gov.au .

TERM OVERVIEWS

LITERACY

This term in Reading students will be continuing to engage in further developing their knowledge and use of the comprehension strategies. Specifically, students will focus on: reading behaviours, setting goals, comparing and contrasting, synthesising, summarising, connections, literal and inferred questioning, research skills and examining media texts. Students, as a part of our daily reading program will continue to complete entry models (graphic organisers) related to these strategies in their Reader’s Notebooks whilst also being afforded opportunities to read independently and discuss texts at a deeper level with peers during Book Clubs.

This term in Writing, students will focus on writing behaviors and explore what makes a good writer. The students will follow a structured writing process that encompasses generating ideas, expanding on those ideas, creating a plan, drafting their work, and ultimately publishing it. Students will create a short story, that will be turned into a Grade 6 Anthology book that can be purchased by families. We will be having a launch party, so stay tuned for this. As they progress, students will further enrich their collection of ideas within their Writer's Notebooks and Draft Books, and they will also engage in weekly dictation exercises to enhance their spelling choices, grammar, and punctuation skills.

NUMERACY

In Term 3 students will be focusing on Number and Algebra for most of the term, firstly learning about Order of Operations and finding unknown quantities. Students will then learn about fractions they will compare fractions with related denominators and locate and represent them on a number line, solve problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions and find fractions of quantities. Students will then be learning about decimals and percentages, by adding, subtracting and multiplying them. Also making connections between equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages. We will finish the term doing Measurement and Geometry looking at transformation of shapes and co-ordinates on a cartesian plane.

INQUIRY

With a focus on developing the knowledge, skills and understandings to evaluate the significance of ethical matters, the ‘big question’ for Term 3 Inquiry: ‘Is Australia an Inclusive Nation?’ Students will explore past and current issues related to race, religion and culture. Students will investigate issues and topics such as The Adam Goodes Story, themes related to refugees through various texts, and multiculturalism through the television series ‘The School That Tried to End Racism’. Students also participate in NAIDOC Week activities this past week, where they were immersed in, and learnt about, aboriginal culture and Dream Time stories.
