Grade 5

Explore the Learning in Grade 5

Grade 5 students have made a wonderful start to term 3 and we are all looking forward to another great term of learning.

Term 3 Overview:

In Writing, your child will be learning how to write persuasive text using a variety of persuasive devices such as rhetorical questions and emotive language. Students will use their knowledge of persuasive writing to write a persuasive text for their business plan for the good or service they are attempting to provide for the community. Students will also be exploring poetry using figurative language such as alliteration, imagery and simile.

In Reading, your child will work on comprehension strategies for fiction, including questioning, making connections, and understanding characters and settings. They will also explore interpreting advertisements critically, analyzing persuasive techniques used in marketing. Additionally, students will engage in close reading of poetry, experimenting with sound devices and imagery. These activities aim to enhance their reading comprehension, critical thinking, and appreciation for different forms of literature.

In Maths, your child will work on further developing their knowledge of strategies to support the four operations (addition, subtraction, division, multiplication). They will also learn about collecting and representing data by monitoring and graphing their water and gas use over a week. We will then explore financial maths, including creating and using budgets for the good or service business plan. Towards the end of term students will be conducting chance experiments, reading 12 and 24 hour time and measuring and comparing angles.

Our topic for Term 3 Inquiry is Economics and Business. We are learning about how our choices as consumers affect the world around us. Students will explore the difference between needs and wants and what factors influence us in making choices as consumers. They will explore the concept of opportunity cost and examine why decisions are made about the way resources are allocated to meet the needs and wants in our community. Students will develop a business plan for a good or service they would like to provide their community. They will be assessed on their budget, good or service and it's sustainability to the environment. At the end of the term, they will present their business plan, product or service idea to the Grade 5’s in a “Shark Tank” style presentation.
