Term 3
Reading:
In reading this term students will focus on both fiction and non-fiction texts and their structures. Each week a text will be chosen to support out Inquiry country to further increase their knowledge and explore story ideas from other countries. When reading fiction texts they will be focusing on character development, setting development, small and big problems within a story, summarising, inferring, the use of dialogue, plot vs theme and how descriptive writing enhances meaning.
When reading non-fiction texts they will investigate text features such as captions, maps, contents pages and specific vocabulary and why an author chooses to use these features to enhance the meaning of a text.
Reading Volunteering:
This term the Year 4 teachers are looking for volunteers to come into the classroom Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:45-9:20 to do reading with a range of different students. There will be a focus on reading aloud and improving their fluency.

Writing:
In writing this term students will be trying a different approach to how writing is taught. Each week the students will focus on a different genre of writing, to ensure they are able to recall the structures and writing techniques more frequently to continue to develop their writing skills. Throughout the term the students will write a range of information reports, persuasive pieces, narratives and procedures linked with our inquiry topic.
Maths:
Number:
Students will continue to develop their knowledge of place value to tens of thousands by ordering, rearranging and regrouping numbers with a focus on odd and even. They will also begin to investigate and improve their knowledge of unit fractions such as 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5 and 1/8, locate these on a number line and continue counting patterns. They will also develop an understanding of how fractions and decimals link and how our place value system extends to tenths and hundredths. Towards the end of Term 3 they will delve into number patterns and balancing simple equations.
Measurement and Geometry:
Students will explore a range of volume, mass, temperature and capacity concepts and match their units. We will begin to investigate lines of symmetry of simple 2D shapes and pictures. Students will also extend their knowledge about angles and learn to measure a range of different angles such as a right angle, acute angle and obtuse using a protractor.
Inquiry:
This term for Inquiry the Year 4 students take a geography focus and will be investigating Neighbouring Countries to Australia. In particular we will be investigating South America, Africa, Japan and India. Students will be determining how these countries characteristics such as climate, natural characteristics and human characteristics are similar or different to Australia.
