Year 7 Welcome BBQ
Thank you to our Year 7 families who came along to our welcome BBQ on Wednesday 22nd February, when we held our first official college function in the new Garden Space behind the B-Wing. Year 7 students and their families took advantage of the spectacular weather and enjoyed the Welcome BBQ, music concert and games in a real picnic atmosphere. Year 10 Peer Support Leaders, College Captains, teachers and year level coordinators worked as a team to host the event with a strong sense of community and celebration. Principal Karl Russell was invited to officially open the new garden by cutting a ribbon and receiving a gift of thanks; presented by Keira and Josh in their first official duty as Year 7 SRC representatives for 2023. This event was strongly supported by our college support staff, Music and PE departments as well as Year 7 teachers.
Year 7 SRC Representatives Badge Ceremony
At our Year 7 Assembly on Monday 6th March, Keira and Josh received their SRC badges and certificates from Principal Karl Russell.
We wish Keira and Josh well in their student voice and leadership journey this year!
Congratulations!
Camp Reminders
**Year 7 Camp
On Wednesday 29th March 2023 students will meet at school and board coaches to be transferred to Forest Edge in Neerim East for three days of fun and challenging activities.
The Year 7 Camp is an essential program for the students to engage with each other and form friendships and bonds beyond the classroom. Students will participate in activities that support self-confidence and promote inclusion with their peers. The purpose of the Year 7 Camp is for students to make connections to each other and their teachers as they transition from primary school to new beginnings in secondary college as they grow to become young adults.
The ‘what to bring’ list and payment options (including instalments) are included in the Compass event.
If you have any questions regarding the camp, please contact Karly Hargreaves, Co-curricular Support at har@cheltsec.vic.edu.au
**Year 8 Camp
Wednesday 10th May sees the Year 8 students head to The Summit Camp in Trafalgar for three days of fun and challenging activities. This camp gives students the opportunity to make new connections with fellow students and establish stronger friendships with others.
The ‘what to bring’ list and payment options (including instalments) are included in the Compass event.
If you have any questions regarding the camp, please contact Karly Hargreaves, Co-curricular Support at har@cheltsec.vic.edu.au
Junior School Congratulations!
School Diaries
Most Junior School students are bringing their school diaries to every lesson every day and are using them successfully for organising assignments, test revisions and homework. Well Done!
Uniform
Please continue to prioritise wearing hard leather school shoes as required, rather than any other black shoe or soft leather sports shoes This is a safety issue, especially in tech rooms or science labs.
Late to School?
In Junior School over the past couple of weeks, there has been a massive improvement in reducing late arrivals to school and class. Well Done! This is greatly appreciated. Being on time is essential for students to grasp the Learning Intentions at the beginning of each lesson, and punctuality is a really great habit to develop for the workforce (in the future).
Year 7 Humanities
Our Year 7's have recently got to know each other a lot better and built a greater sense of community through the completion of their Humanities assignment: Museum Exhibition Creation. The task required each student to create two primary artefacts that represented them, their interests and/or their values. Once completed, the artefacts were put on display for the rest of the class to view and ask questions of the creators.
Year 8 Humanities
As part of our unit on Landforms and Landscapes, our Year 8 students have been examining how different types of volcanoes erupt in different ways. Each group was given one of the four main types: cinder cones, composite volcanoes, shield volcanoes, and lava domes to test the lava flow. Making their play-doh from scratch, all students worked hard (while making quite a mess) to finish their volcano in time for the eruption at the end of the period. Well done to 8C!
Year 8 English
Currently our Year 8 students are researching their ‘Remarkable Person’ Google slideshow and Oral Presentation. Each student has a free choice in selecting a notable figure from history or contemporary society; to research their life’s work and the impact they have had on society (and in some cases the world.) Students are also asked to reflect on their connection to this figure and how our school values might be demonstrated in the life of this role model.
“I chose Eleanor Roosevelt because I find her inspiring.” - Linnea
“I chose a Chinese poet named Li Bai because I think his life in Ancient China was difficult and he overcame challenges. He wrote many famous poems.” - Harves
“My Remarkable Person is Dr Edward Robert Jenner, the inventor of the Smallpox Vaccine. I chose him because I found his work to be very interesting and his discovery has saved many lives." - Zubia
“I chose Mihajlo Pupin because his life is inspiring. He invented the long-distance telephone line.” - Una
“Richard Trevithick is my Remarkable Person because I found his history interesting - he was the inventor of the first locomotive.” - Nathaniel
“I chose the Wright brothers - Wilbur and Orville who are known as the inventors and flyers of the first aeroplane.” - Maddy
“I chose Nikola Tesla who invented the Tesla coil which makes high voltage electricity.“ - Jonathan
“I wanted to research someone connected with sport, so I chose Baron Pierre de Coubertin, one of the founders of the Modern Olympics." - Harrison
