Liturgy

The year started with a very special Staff Opening Liturgy to welcome the teachers back to the school year. The theme of this year, “Mary arose and went with haste” (Lk 1:39), was borrowed from World Youth Day which will be in Lisbon, Portugal in July/August this year.  Teachers had time to reflect on what God is calling them to do this year and how Mary can be a great example to follow in the times of challenge and need.

Last week, week 4 we had Opening liturgies for our schools to begin our year. The SOF joined together early in the school day on Thursday, later followed by the SOL and the SOE.  Students reflected on the importance of looking for God in the times of challenge, asking for guidance and starting the year with God on their side.  As we start the school year we pray that all of our students grow deeper in the faith as we journey throughout the school year.

Looking forward to next week, we see the start of Lent.  Tuesday is Shrove Tuesday followed by Ash Wednesday which is the start of the Lenten season in our faith.  On Tuesday students will share pancakes across the school, Shrove Tuesday is a Christian celebration where we prepare ourselves for the lenten period.  To further understand its significance please click here.  Ash Wednesday is the start of the Lenten season of the liturgical Church year.  Lent is the time before Easter, the day we celebrate Jesus’ rising from the dead. To read more about Ash Wednesday please click here.

Throughout Term 1 each stage group will celebrate liturgies together having a different focus, reinforcing what is being covered in their classes.  These liturgies help students make connections between their learning and the deep Catholic roots of St Luke’s Catholic College.

Many blessings,

Year 12 Retreat

The Year 12 retreat was held at Benedict XVI Retreat Centre from January 31 to February 3 this year.  Students were a little apprehensive as to what to expect as they had never experienced a Retreat before.

Retreat focussed on our students being the “Now of God” as stated by Pope Francis at the closing mass of World Youth Day in Panama.  He stated “encourage dreaming of and working for tomorrow, starting today”. “Not tomorrow but now”, he said. “Realise that you have a mission and fall in love”, “We may possess everything, but if we lack the passion of love, we will have nothing”.

Students were given time to reflect on their HSC journey and were encouraged to let go of everything holding them back.  We welcomed Chris Doyle to share with the group in his way of weaving contemporary music, humour and scripture together.

There were many highlights but I would have to say that the last night in which students read a letter they had written to their future selves in 2022, and without knowing also read a letter from their loved ones was most notable.  The letters from loved ones all touched our students and emotions ran high as well as tissues disappearing quickly!!

A big thank you goes to Mrs Roach, Miss Chand and Mr Blomfield for the great support and leadership provided whilst on Retreat.  A big thank you also goes to all of the House Leaders, Ms Genovese and Mrs Bauer for visiting us throughout the week.

Caritas - Project Compassion

As we approach the Lenten Season, we will once again partner with Caritas Australia in their Project Compassion Appeal to raise money for those across the globe lacking basic needs. This year, Caritas, with our help, hope to make a difference in many more lives!

School of Foundations

The School year has started and around the School of Foundations Religious Education classes the following is a snapshot of what is being covered.

Early Stage One

Kindergarten students are exploring their driving question’ How can I be a good friend?. First they identified ways they can be good friends. Below are some of their responses:

Stage One

In Stage one students have been answering the driving question ‘How do we care for God’s creation? ‘ They explored the Bible passage about God’s creation. Then they identified things that God created.

Stage Two

Stage two explored the importance of meditation using a y chart. They explored their driving question ‘How do we live in prayer’ and identified what they know and need to know.

School of Leadership

The School year has started and in the School of Leadership Religious Education classes the following is a snapshot of what is being covered.

Stage 3:

In this unit, students will explore how the 7 Sacraments (with an explicit focus on Confirmation) guide them to receive the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, and ultimately how the Gifts can help them to uncover their own gifts and talents. As an important part of their spiritual journey, students will learn how they can harness their gifts and talents to contribute meaningfully to their world, to flourish and to live a fulfilling life. Students will be explicitly taught how to apply the I3 pillar in order to transfer their content knowledge through opportunities to express their thinking, creativity and use their gifts and talents in Drama responses. Students will also appreciate the gifts and talents, and use of dramatic elements and techniques of others through viewing and critiquing the dramatic responses of their peers.

Year 7:

In Term 1, Year 7 students wonder about their own evolving identity, where they belong and what their purpose in life is. Students will explore belonging and identity within communities, develop strategies and tools to navigate life’s journey in order to enhance human flourishing at St Luke’s.

Year 8:

The world we are living in has many VUCA challenges. Many circumstances are volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous. In Term 1, Year 8 students will answer the driving question, ‘How can we be advocates for human dignity in this VUCA world?’ The Catholic Church proclaims that human life is sacred and that the dignity of the human person is the foundation of a moral vision for society. Students will begin to understand that every person is precious, that people are more important than things, and that the measure of every institution is whether it threatens or enhances the life and dignity of the human person. In the first few weeks of the term, students will explore human dignity from different perspectives and then relate the life experiences of inspiring people to human dignity and in the final weeks of Term 1, students will demonstrate their ability to be advocates for human dignity through a synodal process.

School of Entrepreneurs

Year 9:

Students in Stage 5 wonder, in light of the revolutionary words and actions of Jesus, if it is right to challenge authority.  Students are invited to discern and interpret the relevance and possible impact of Jesus for today.  Students are opened up to the challenges and hope filled opportunities of following the way of Jesus in our modern world. They will explore Jesus’ ministry in the Scripture so that they learn how to counter-culturally respond to contemporary issues in order to make religion relevant in their lives.

Year 10

In term 1 Year 10 students will be attempting to respond to the driving question “How does religion influence an individual’s decisions in regards to their body?”  Students in stage 5 wonder about the interconnections between Christian Life, Church Teaching, conscience and Inspirational people of faith.  Students will firstly turn to church teachings so as to be able to gain a deeper understanding of how religion can assist in personal decision making.  Finally, students will present their understanding by explaining the interconnections mentioned above.

Year 11

As students in Year 11 have just started on their journey to the HSC, we see a number of different options for Religious Education being taken up.

  • We have a class of approx 45 students who are doing the Studies of Religion 1 unit course in a compressed format.  This means that these students will do both Year 11 and Year 12 components of the course in one year, therefore they will sit the HSC for this subject in October this year.  We wish them well!!
  • We have a class of approximately 25 students having just started Studies of Religion 2 Unit course.  This course will run over the normal 2 year period.
  • We also have a class of approximately 12 students who have taken up the Mission Unit.  This course is about putting your faith in action, therefore students will be more hands-on in different ways throughout the year assisting and/or driving social outreach opportunities with the school.

Year 12

Studies of Religion 2 Unit

  • We wish this class all the best as they head toward the HSC in October.

Studies of Religion Accelerated 2022 Class/ Year 12 Mission

Congratulations to the Year 12 students who sat their HSC for Studies of Religion 1 unit last year.  This was our first cohort through and they did very well in the exam itself.  This group this year will be completing the Year 12 Mission program which is about putting your faith in action, therefore students will be more hands-on in different ways throughout the year assisting and/or driving social outreach opportunities with the school.
