Contemporary Artworks and Landscapes

On Tuesday 14 February, our Stage 5 Visual Arts class visited Bundanon.

Bundanon is a beautiful art museum and educational space on the banks of the Shoalhaven River.  We had no idea that this cultural centre was so close to home!

We travelled by bus just past North Nowra to get there. Once we arrived we browsed the Art Gallery and saw a lot of interesting contemporary artworks by a number of artists. We saw some sculptures that were inspired by the landscape and nature. The artworks made a statement about the environment and how we can care for the world around us.

Contemporary art can seem confusing at times, but we can now understand deciphering these artworks a bit better now.

We went on a walk to enjoy the property ourselves. We then expressed our own creativity, creating artworks of our own which were inspired by the land and animals around the environment.

It was a great experience and I truly hope we can visit again soon- hopefully for an overnight art camp!

Primary Super 8's Cricket 2023

On Wednesday 15 February, a group of students headed to Dapto to compete against five other schools playing cricket. The format of the games was eight players, seven over innings.

After placing first in their pool, the NCS team battled bravely in the final, falling short of winning the competition by ten runs. However, all players were very gracious in victory and defeat, proudly wearing their 2nd-place medals.

The batting was strong, with Sam L (most runs scored) and Toby G helping us put a solid score on the board each game. Sam managed to get a couple of boundaries, much to the crowd’s delight. Joshua A and Noah G did a great job as wicketkeepers. Xavier Stumphs and Sam L shared the captaincy duties.

Our bowling was impressive, particularly in our first and last games. Along with the aforementioned players, Thomas L, Violet M and Will P bowled accurately with Noah M, our ‘finishing’; bowler in each game. Apart from the second match, where we bowled a few too many wides, I was impressed by the accuracy of our bowlers. This restricted the score of opposition teams.

Ethan V took photos, assisted with scoring, and experienced some umpiring duties at square leg. A special thanks to our High School helpers Caleb M and Kent E. Both students looked after umpiring and scoring duties and helped coach the team through warm-ups.

Congratulations to our 2023 Student Ambassadors

Last year, we had a number of our current Year 9 and 10 students apply to be our 2023 Student Ambassadors. At our Secondary Assembly last Friday we were able to present first ever student ambassadors for 2023 with their badges. Congratulation Danica K, Casey M (absent from photo), Katie S, Annie M, Maddie W, Ashanti B, Charley B and Emma S!

These student ambassadors will be the 'face' of our school and will assist Mrs Herring and Mrs Dickinson to represent the school to current and prospective students and families at expos, marketing events (such as Open Week and Year 7 Experience Day) conduct school tours , as well as assist at other NCS community events.

We were really impressed with everyone who applied for this position. These young people completed an application or were nominated by a teacher and then had to undertake an interview. Over the coming months they will undertake training in conducting school tours, presentation skills, and more about how to do their role best as student ambassadors.

CSSA South Coast Zone Swimming Carnival

A report from Secondary

by Harrison F

On Monday 20 February, 18 of our Secondary students went to compete at the Nowra Aquatic Park for our first ever combined Primary and Secondary Zone Swimming Carnival.

It was a hot day, making it even more inviting to race and cool off in the pool. The event went for 10 hours with the positive team spirit kept up for the whole day.

There was fierce competition from many other Christian schools in our sports zone, including far away from the Snowy Mountains. It was tough with many tired faces afterwards. Many of us were involved in the cheerleading which was heard around the pool.

A special mention goes to Claire H (16 Girls) & Lili M (18 Girls) who were awarded Age Champions for their amazing efforts at the Carnival. Congratulations to those competitors who will go on to represent NCS at the CSSA State Carnival at Sydney Olympic Park in Homebush. Thanks everyone for a great day and opportunity to represent our school in swimming!

A report from Primary

by Mr Parker

Twenty-nine students from Years 2-6 represented NCS's Primary Department in a variety of aquatic events.

For our Year 2 and 3 students it was their first experience of a zone carnival, so they were all 'Champions' for having a go. Thirteen of our team recorded personal best times, which was very impressive on such a hot, humid day.

Special 'shout outs' go to the following students: Alex W for a 7 second improvement on his school time in breaststroke. Shakaya N for a 6 second improvement in her freestyle, Amelia P for a 4 second PB over her school time for butterfly and Elijah JC for a WHOPPING 15 second improvement on his school time for freestyle.

Congratulations to Noah S, Shakaya N and Mitchell P from Y6, who finished in the top 3 for events and have qualified for the Primary State Carnival in March.

Global Football Network UK tour

A huge congratulations to Jackson C of Year 10 who was selected by Global Football Network, based out of Manchester, to be part of an U15/16s football squad from Sydney.

Jackson spent 2 weeks of the summer holidays in the UK being coached by highly experienced coaches and playing against local academy squads from Bolton, Liverpool, Burnley and Sheffield. The squad also undertook stadium tours of Anfield Stadium (Liverpool) and Etihad Stadium (Manchester City), watched a live game with Manchester City vs Chelsea and spent time sightseeing around Liverpool and Manchester.

What an amazing experience!

La Chandeleur

As the new year begins it is appropriate that the Year 8 French classes celebrate "La Chandeleur" by making pancakes. This tradition dates back to 472AD when the Pope decided to celebrate the presentation of Jesus at the Temple, 40 days after his birth. It is an opportunity to pray for good health and success in the year ahead. Une chandelle is a candle and Christians would have a candle blessed at Church. They would then take the candle home.

This symbolises Jesus as the light of the world. We have also considered what caused the change from one shared language (Genesis 11:1), to thousands of languages in our world today? This is explained in Genesis 11, where the Tower of Babel was being built as a monument to man's cleverness and pride,  but God scattered them and confused their language, so the tower was never completed and people could no longer share one language.

If God cursed the people by confusing their languages, is it right for us to try to learn other languages? A good question! The New Testament (Matthew 28:18-20) shows Jesus commissioning his disciples to go into the whole world to preach the gospel (not just to the local Greek-speaking people - which is fortunate for us!). In Acts 2:4-12 the curse is overturned when the Holy Spirit is poured out and people from all nations heard the message because, 'each one heard them speaking in his own language'. Three thousand were converted that day! In year 8 we also have the awesome opportunity to 'reverse the curse' as we learn how to communicate with people from another language group. Vive le français!

Years 1 & 5 Nowra Show Excursion

On Friday 10th February Year 1 and their helpful Year 5 buddies attended the Nowra Show. There was so much to see and enjoy, including the animal enclosure with baby chicks, guinea pigs, piglets and No Drama Llama.

Sitting in the shade of the trees, we watched the horse competitions. We saw model drones and experienced air force simulation goggles. Even in the heat, the wood chopping competitors speedily chopped and sawed the wood.

The Pavilion was the place to find our NCS friends’ competition entries. We watched Mr Cochrane demonstrate how to milk a cow and enjoyed a cool bottle of strawberry, vanilla or chocolate milk afterwards. Last, but not least, we were treated to delicious mini doughnuts from NCS Year 5 parents who were at the show with their doughnut van. Thank you very much, Jane and Matthew!

What an amazing day we had at the showgrounds! Thank you so much to our parent helpers on the day. We appreciate you coming with us. Also, well done to both sets of buddies, our NCS students in Years 1 and 5. You were so very well-behaved and patient with one another. We look forward to more adventures together this year.
