Term 1, Week 6 - Friday 3rd March, 2023

Good afternoon OLSC families

I hope everyone has had a great 2 weeks since the last newsletter.  This term has been particularly busy already and we have started our Prep enrolment list for 2024.  This week we had our school information night and it was well attended by prospective new families. If you have a child at four year old kinder please contact he office for an enrolment form and interviews will take place later this term and into Term 3.

Cyber-Safety Parent Sessions

In the last two weeks the students and staff have been involved in cyber-safety workshops hosted by The Cyber Safety Project.  The staff workshop was very informative and many new learnings for staff were achieved.  Each year level participated in the workshops through the day.

The parent workshop took place in the last fortnight via zoom and all families who registered are able to watch or re-watch the recording of the parent workshop.   You are still able to register now to view the recording of the initial zoom which was titled, 'Plan, Prevent and Protect.'

The second zoom will take place in May.  I encourage parents that have not yet registered to register for the next workshop on Tuesday the 9th May.  The topic is 'Safety on the Socials' and I highly recommend this professional learning for all parents.  The link to register is:

Reminder: Upcoming School Closure Days

On Thursday 9th and Friday 10th March we will have school closure days for our staff conference.  The professional development focus of the conference is further developing an appreciation of different cultures and supporting students to achieve their best.

There will also be a school closure day on Monday 24th April (this is the day prior to the ANZAC day public holiday).  Term 2 will resume on Wednesday 26th April.  The focus of this closure day is Child Safety Standards, Child Safety and Code of Conduct and other compliance requirements for working with children.

Terri Campbell's Visit

For quite a few years now, the staff and students at OLSC have been fortunate enough to work closely with the wonderful Terri Campbell. Last week, she came to our school to lead some of our students in engaging writing lessons and several of our teachers were able to watch and learn from the modelling she was doing.

The Preps read 'Dan the Flying Man' and then wrote some sentences using the book to help them. Shalome's 1/2s watched a video showing how to draw a puppy. They wrote the instructions to match the video.

In Emma's 3/4 class, they used pictures from the book 'The Night of the Hiding Moon' to tell their own stories and then make a bookie with them. Finally, the 5/6 students viewed a video about emperor penguins and used specific vocabulary to write informative sentences.

We look forward to Terri's return in the second week of Term 2.

Before and After School Care - Quantin Binnah

A number of families have contacted myself directly and the school office regarding the challenge to gain casual and permanent places in before and after school care (particularly after school care).  I have spoken to Jennie at Quantin Binnah (OSHC Director) and she hopes that this situation will be alleviated within coming days as they employ more staff.

Employment Opportunity: Quantin Binnah has mentioned that they have positions for any parents that are looking for employment.  Contact Quantin Binnah for details.

Family Details

Please ensure all of your details are up to date and the administration office has been advised if your email or home address has changed if you have a new or different phone number.

Have a great weekend, stay safe and see you all next week.

Justin and all of the staff at OLSC
