Around the College

Year 8 Camp

Our Year 8 students headed to Waratah Bay for their camp where they participated in surfing, giant swing, swimming, lots of walking and plenty more!

Science Activities at Lunchtime!

S12, one of the College science laboratories is no longer a silent, empty room on Friday lunchtimes. Instead, it is alive with curious minds and active kids. Coming together from different year levels and peer groups, a group of enthusiastic and curious young adults met and began exploring electric circuits, mirrors, simple machines and microscopes.

The Science Activities will continue throughout the term, developing into a Science Club over time. Along the way, we will embark on STEM challenges such as next week’s Ping Pong Pick-up Challenge. All students are welcome.

Also, a warm thank you to Mr. Walsh, Laboratory Technician, for his support each week.

Year 9B - Science

Year 9B science class worked on making electrical circuits and batteries out of lemons to make an LED lightbulb turn on!

Mathematics

Ms. Hogan is teaching her Year 9 mathematics students Pythagoras! The students measured the height of triangles created against walls, to help them understand Pythagoras in the world of building.

Year 11 Food Studies - Spicy Mocha Cupcakes and Tea Biscuits

Mrs. Cassidy's students are learning about Food Origins, including the global spread of food commodities. These delicious treats contained tea, coffee, cocoa and various spices which historically have been traded and continue to be valuable in our current food system.

Senior Boys Cricket

On a very hot day in Leongatha, the Senior Boys Cricket team opened the year in the SSV competition led by Year 11 student, Harry Hoekstra, as skipper. In game one we played Leongatha Secondary College (LSC) in the local derby and after winning the toss we put together 113 after the allotted 16 overs. Hoekstra retired on 30 along with a handy 29 from Tadgh Gannon (Year 11). In the run chase, we managed to restrict LSC to 81 but the fielding and bowling would need to improve if we were to advance past the strong Bass Coast College (BCC) in game 2.

Clearly a higher standard game with tight bowling and well-set fields from BCC as we batted first again in game 2. Mitch Croatto (Year 10) was the standout with 28 and we managed to get to 103 from our 19 overs. Hoekstra knocked over both opening batsmen from BCC with accuracy and pace. From there the game got away from us with some quality hitting and slightly wayward bowling. Kade Berryman (Year 10) stopped the flow with some crafty leg spin and gradually we got back to level, particularly after a brilliant catch in the deep from Croatto. Hoekstra came back on and grabbed a couple of wickets which left Tim Niven (Year 10) to bowl the last over with BCC needing 7 runs with one wicket in hand. He held his nerve and a run out on the last ball with two runs required ensured Mary MacKillop are through to the next round on March 7th! Well done boys and good luck moving forward!
