From the Acting Principal

Week 5

Parents and Carers,

It was great to see so many parents at our Parent Information Session on Wednesday night in the Community Centre. We had the opportunity to hear from school leaders, PFOL representatives and School Advisory Council members. Then we moved into groups to give parents an opportunity to contribute ideas of how we can work together to foster and support new and ongoing student activities.

We are currently making arrangements for our annual open day during Catholic Education week, on Thursday 16th March. Positive word of mouth is the best endorsement of the school that we can get. So as you move about the community over the next few weeks make sure you are all talking about the great things going on at our school. We have had a number of new families go through the school already this year looking at enrolling for next year so it would be great to keep the momentum rolling.

On Tuesday this week we had our Shrove Tuesday pancake morning. A huge thanks goes out to Sarah Medawar, our PFOL Leader and Liz in the office for getting everything sorted out for the morning. Thanks also to all the parents who came along on the day and ensured that there was plenty of piping hot pancakes for all. The smell of the delicious pancakes wafting through the corridor all morning was very hard to resist. I know the PFOL are reaching out at the moment to find a treasurer and some class reps to help broaden their team.

On Wednesday the 22nd of February, we welcomed the school and student leaders from St. Francis Xavier and Holy Trinity, as we celebrated Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent with a Parish Mass at 9.30am. Our students joined parishioners, staff and parents in receiving the ashes from the student leaders from all three schools.

This week, students in years 3-6 represented the school in the first of our inter-school sports events of the year. We are part of the School Sport Victoria’s Eltham District. The district comprises Eltham East, Eltham Primary, Eltham North, Research, Eltham College and St Thomas, North Greensborough. We compete in the major team events of swimming, cross country and athletics which are stepping stones toward the School Sport Victoria championships. In terms 2 and 3 we also participate in the Eltham District’s winter and summer weekly competitions. The members of the team performed very well with a number of them representing the school for the first time.

As mentioned over the last few weeks, we have locked in CLC Eltham on Thursday the 9th March for our annual Twilight Sports event. This is a whole school event with fun prep-2 activities from 4.30-5.30, whole school running events 5.30-6.30 and then we finish with year 3-6 fun field events between 6.30 and 7.30. While all this is going on, the parents are invited to mingle with each other while watching or participating in the events. The PFOL will be running a BBQ and selling drinks to keep us all nourished and hydrated so make sure you volunteer some time to assist them when the time arrives. To enable us to free up staff to set up for the event, we invite families to pick up their children at 1.00pm. As with the parent teacher conversations, we will cater for students who can’t be picked up early till normal finishing time at 3.15pm.

Please take a moment to read about lots of the other exciting things happening at OLHC in the other areas of this newsletter.

Regards,
