Principal's Message

I hope that you had a chance to enjoy the holidays with your children. Even if you still had to work for yourself, I hope you enjoyed watching your children unwind and relax. Schools are very busy places, both children and staff do get very tired by the end of the term. The last term was an eleven-week term and you could tell the children were really looking forward to a break. The weather was not the best, but the staff have returned looking as if they too are rested. Perhaps when the wintry conditions make us stay indoors, read books and watch old DVD’s the body really does get a chance to re-energise itself!

This week we welcome Denise Kelly into our school community as our new Deputy Principal and Learning and Teaching Leader. It is always interesting asking someone ‘new’ what are their initial thoughts and observations of a school. So far Denise has told with me that she has witnessed and felt a vibrant and happy buzz around our school where learning is the focus. She has also commented on our welcoming and well-mannered students who greet her each day with a hello or smile.  Another observation is that our staff are passionate and hardworking who strive to ensure every student experiences success. This feedback from Denise reinforces my strong belief that we belong to a special place, where student learning and student wellbeing is paramount.

I will continue to remind parents that our first bell rings in the morning at 8:45 am. All students should be at school well before this time to begin the day, as our gates open at 8:30 am. Being punctual is an asset that will be needed in all walks of life, it is a habit that will stand children in good stead for life. Whilst at school we can emphasise and support families in teaching this habit to children, it is parents who have to take responsibility for making sure children know, understand and develop the habits related to being punctual. The best way to do that is to model being punctual on a daily basis.

Just a few quick reminders:

Grandparents Day is on Tuesday 24th July. It will begin with a liturgy in the church at 9:15 am followed by activities in the classrooms and finishing with a morning tea at the back of the church.

SMDP Readathon - To celebrate Book Week in Week 6 our PIP (Parents in Partnerships) have organised an SMDP Readathon. Look out for the Readathon forms going home next week. We encourage all students to be involved in the fundraising initiative that also supports and promotes our students’ learning.

First Eucharist - On Sunday 5th August nine students from SMDP will be receiving Communion for the first time. Please keep these students in your prayers and thoughts.

Happy start of Term 3. Keep warm and God bless.
