Agriculture

Well what a busy start to the year it has been for the Agriculture students at Guyra Central School. The local show circuit is coming to an end for another year and it has seen many Guyra Central School students excel in a wide range of areas.

It all began with the Glen Innes show where a group of 20 students were involved with judging a range of products including meat sheep, merino sheep, fleeces, cattle, grains and eggplants. Stephanie Cameron placed 1st in meat sheep and 3rd in Merinos, while Claire Davidson placed 2nd in the Meat Sheep. Tayla Mitchell was 3rd in the Grain section. In the cattle section Claire Davidson placed 2nd with Tayla Mitchell, Stephanie Cameron and Cooper Stanley all performing very well and unlucky to miss out on a final placing.

At the Guyra Show, there was more success with students participating in fleece judging, meat sheep, cattle and a fruit and vegetable section. Many students achieved fantastic results across all areas, particularly the Meat sheep section with Michael Looker placing 1st in the juniors, along with Ben Stevens 3rd, Lucy Mayled 5th and Harry Ray received and  encouragement award. The senior section saw Tayla Mitchell place 2nd, Claire Davidson 4th, Steph Cameron 5th and Colleen Pearson with the encouragement award. In the fleece judging for the juniors; Michael Looker 3rd, Lucy Mayled 4th and Brooke Grills received the encouragement award, while the seniors saw Tayla Mitchell place 3rd and Colleen Pearson and Lauren Irvine gain the encouragement award. Finally in the cattle section, Lauren Irvine was awarded overall champion with Ashley Donnelly placing 2nd.

There were 4 students who were fortunate enough to then progress to the Zone finals which were held at Armidale in conjunction with the Armidale Show. Stephanie Cameron, Felicity Campbell, Lauren Irvine and Colleen Pearson all competed in a number of events including merino sheep, fleece, meat sheep, cattle, grains and fruit and vegetable judging. Stephanie was successful in placing 2nd in the Meat sheep section and 1st in the Merino sheep class so will now progress to the Sydney Royal Show in April where she will compete at the state final. We wish you all the very best.

Merino Wethers Challenge - Part 1

On the 4th-5th March 2019, the 9/10 Agrifoods class travelled to Dubbo for part 1 of the National Merino wether challenge. This involved an education day where the students attended a variety of workshops including an overview of the wool industry and career opportunities available in Agriculture, a session of wool value and characteristics, breeding objectives and genetic selection of breeding ewes and rams, and finally a section on animal welfare and nutrition. The students gained valuable knowledge and insight after speaking with leading industry professionals. We also picked up 7 Merino wethers and brought back to school where the students will be responsible for managing and feeding them until the National Merino Breeders Show and Sale held in Dubbo on the 27th and 28th of August where they will compete against around 50 other schools from across the state with the champion pen being based on fleece, meat and production scores.

Additionally, the students were treated to a field trip to Narromine Station. This is was broad acre cropping system where they grow cotton and a range of winter crops. The students were elated by this experience where they discovered more about irrigation systems and restrictions as well as the vast array of machinery and technologies involved with the production of cotton.

The student would like to thank former teacher Ms Sarah Steele and Narromine High School for their hospitality, as well as Mr Billy Browning for the cotton trip. Also big thank you to Mr Scott Miller and Mrs Nadine Youman for supervising students and providing us with this wonderful learning experience.
