Team Spirit is Our Competitive Edge

Term 2 Round Up

Over the course of term 2 the Academy has had teams represent the school in a range of sporting tournaments and competitions. These competitions include the CGSAV Futsal, Badminton, Basketball, Athletics and Cross Country as well as the Victorian One Day Schools Cup Volleyball Tournament and the Worawa Aboriginal College Reconciliation Sports Carnival. Whilst we were unable to take home any trophies following these competitions, we were able to witness fantastic individual performances and some very promising signs for the future.

We also look forward to watching our Junior and Senior Hockey teams compete at the CGSAV Division 2 tournament at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Wednesday 14  June.

CGSAV Futsal

The CGSAV Division 1 Futsal tournament was held at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre on Thursday 27 April. Academy had representing teams in the Junior, Intermediate and Senior divisions, with eight schools being represented in each division. The teams were coached by past student, Rosein Murphy, Mr. Alan Tomassini and Mr, John Andritsos respectively. Our junior team performed well and was unlucky not to progress to the Grand Final after finishing in 3rd position following the group stage. A standout performer on the day was Year 8 Student, Olivia McLachlan, who looks to be a great prospect for future years. After a slow start to the competition the Intermediate team were able to finish strongly, winning their last two games to finish in 6th position. Year 9 Student, Nastasia Viola,, was a valuable contributor, providing opposition teams with headaches as she attacked and created play in the front half. The Senior team progressed to the Grand Final and finished in 2nd position after being defeated 3 -1 by Santa Maria in a penalty shootout.

Year 12 Student, Alexandra Morales-Alonso, was a key contributor throughout the day and Year 11 Student, Zoe Athanasopoulos, was awarded the Grand Final Most Valuable Player award.

CGSAV Badminton

The CGSAV Division 2 Badminton tournament was held at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre on Wednesday 3 May. Academy had representing teams in the Junior, Intermediate and Senior divisions, with each division consisting of five teams. The teams were coached by staff members Mr. Aeneas Gallivan, Ms. Emma Spreckley and Ms. Tanya Vajda respectively. Unfortunately, neither the Junior, Intermediate or Senior teams were able to progress through to a grand final after recording mixed results during the group stage.

Notable performers on the day were; Gabriella Pezzimenti (Year 8), Olivia McLachlan (Year 8), Emma Ibrahim (Year 9), Simone Jacklin (Year 12) and Renee Jacklin (Year 12), who all provided fantastic effort on the day.

CGSAV Basketball

The CGSAV Division 2 Basketball tournament was held at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre on Wednesday 10 May. Academy had representing teams in the Junior A, Junior B, Intermediate and Senior divisions, with each division consisting of six teams. The teams were coached by Ms. Jessica Dowton, Mr. Michael Molony, Mr. Gary Lin and Mr. David Molino respectively. The tournament yielded mixed results for the Academy; the Junior B team were eliminated following the group stage, whereas our Senior, Intermediate and Junior A teams were knocked out of the competition following a successful progression to the semifinal. All coaches reported that their teams played with great enthusiasm and spirit on the day.

The following players were key contributors for their teams and produced great individual efforts across the tournament, Adok Nywul (Year 7), Student Darcie Mitchell (Year 8), Jessica Fragomenni (Year 10), Nicole Karakiklas (Year 12) and Mackenzie Braini (Year 12).

CGSAV Junior Basketball

The CGSAV Junior Basketball tournament was held at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre on Tuesday 16 May. This tournament provided an opportunity for more of our junior basketballers to showcase their skills. The teams were again coached by staff members Ms. Jessica Dowton and Mr. Michael Molony. The tournament was a successful day for the Academy; the Junior A team finished in 3rd position and the Junior B team finished second after being narrowly defeated by 4 points in the Grand Final. Standout performers across the day were; Charlie Gray (Year 7), Toni Lattouf (Year 7) and Carla Famularo (Year 8).

The two junior basketball tournaments have shown that Academy Basketball has a bright future in the years to come.

Victorian One Day Schools Cup Volleyball

The Victorian One Day Schools Cup Volleyball Tournament, Division 2, saw The Academy have representing teams in Years 7,8,10 and 12. The Year 10 and Year 12 teams competed on Tuesday 9 May, the Year 7 teams competed on Thursday 11 May and the Year 8 Teams competed on Friday 12 May.

Senior Team Year 12 :

The senior team coached by past students, Rebecca Arena and Kaija Bond, were able to successfully progress to the quarter finals following the group stage games. They were narrowly defeated in the quarter final match, unfortunately running out of time to reduce the opposition team lead. Given the team was largely made up of Year 11 students there are many positive signs for next year, and we can expect further improvement as the group gains more experience. Influential players on the day were Aoife Greenwood (Year 9) and year Sienna Arena (Year 11).

Intermediates Year 10:

The intermediate teams coached by past students, Drew Bennett-Papworth and Claudia Cover, were unfortunately unable to progress further than the group stage games. However, great enthusiasm and effort were displayed by both of our year 10 teams on the day. It was particularly great to see our Year 10 B team finish the tournament strongly. They comfortably won their last game after improving dramatically across the day. Influential players across the tournament were; Bella Brockman (Year 9), Nastasia Viola (Year 9), Taylor Bennett-Papworth (Year 10) and Deja Bond (Year 10).

Year 8:

The Year 8 Teams coached by past students, Xin Bao Tan, Shayla Dang and Angellyn Lok, were unfortunately unable to progress further than the group stage games. The two teams competed well on the day, and were never beaten by a large margin. As the girls continue to play Volleyball with each other over the next few years their team chemistry will continue to develop and positive results are sure to follow. Strong performers across the day were; Olivia McLachlan, Mia Phu and Gretta Zabotto.

Year 7:

The Year 7 Teams coached by past students, Xin Bao Tan and Angellyn Lok, were unfortunately unable to progress any further than the group stage games. However, the two year 7 teams were able to gain valuable experience and successfully complete their first high school tournament. Strong performers on the day were; Lexi Allen and Izzie Dinnen.

CGSAV Athletics:

The Division 2 CGSAV Athletics Carnival was held at Lakeside Stadium on Friday 26 May. The carnival was comprised of 145 track and field events and Academy had 81 students represented on the day. In the lead up to this event our students attended afternoon training sessions facilitated by Athletics Coach, Mr. Anthony Dell, from the Collingwood Harriers Athletics Club, Mr. Aeneas Gallivan and Ms. Joanne Gardner at George Knott Reserve. Academy had a very successful day, finishing the carnival in second place, with an even contribution from all age groups. We witnessed some exceptional individual performances by many students on the track and in the field. A highlight of the day came in the final event of the carnival, when the Academy team comfortably won the Open Age Medley Relay. Congratulations to the relay team members Kristabelle Francis (Year 12, 100m), Olivia Leahy (Year 10, 100m), Greta Zabotto (Year 8, 200m) and Emilia Rossi (Year 9, 400m) for successfully winning the event.

Worawa Aboriginal College Reconciliation Sports Carnival:

The Worawa Aboriginal College Reconciliation Sports Carnival took place on Tuesday 30 May at the Worawa Aboriginal College in Healesville. Academy had representing teams, comprised of Year 7 and 8 students in Basketball, Netball and Volleyball. These teams were coached by Mr. Michael Molony, Ms. Tanya Vajda and Mr. Aeneas Gallivan respectively. The carnival was attended by a range of schools from across Victoria, and our students were able to connect with a diverse range of people. Most importantly it provided our students with a fantastic opportunity to learn about first nations culture and reconciliation.

CGSAV Cross Country:

The CGSAV Division 1 Cross Country 3km race took place on Thursday 1 June at Yarra Bend Park, Fairfield. The Academy had year 7,8,9 and 12 representatives in the Junior, Intermediate and Senior divisions. Due to the unavailability of our year 10 and 11 students, many of our representatives were required to race in divisions above their age range. We thank the students who raced above their age as it allowed us to have a spread of competitors in each division. Standout performers on the day were:

  • Olivia McLachlan (Year 8) who finished 6th, racing above her age in the Intermediate Division with a time of 11 minutes and 40 seconds.
  • Eloise Robinson (Year 9) who finished 7th, racing above her age in the Senior Division with a time of 12 minutes and 40 seconds.
  • Emilia Rossi (Year 9) who finished 1st, racing above her age in the Senior Division with a time of 10 minutes and 41 seconds.

The Academy Cross Country team is sure to be in safe hands with those three girls leading the way in the years to come.

Individual  Lucy Delbridge

Congratulations to Year 10 student Lucy Delbridge, on her outstanding performance at the 2023 Australian Junior Athletics Championships, held at the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre, Brisbane, during the term 1 school holidays. Lucy ran 4th in the Women’s Under 17 800m race with a time of 2 minutes, 11.24 seconds and 2nd in the Women’s Under 17 400m race with a time of 56.35 seconds. Lucy competed against runners from across the country and certainly showed that she is of national competition standard. The entire Academy community can be proud of Lucy’s efforts and we look forward to watching what she can do on the track in the years to come, after her amazing efforts to date. Well done Lucy!
