Junior School Swimming Program

In week 8 we had 138 students in foundation, year 1 and year 2 students head to Casey R.A.C.E to complete a 5 day swimming program. Thanks to the swimming in schools funding this program was heavily subsided.

The school swimming program allows students to learn valuable water safety skills but also encourages independence with bus travel and getting themselves dressed.

The feedback from the students was that they enjoyed the experience and staff that attended were pleased with the way in which students displayed the school values.

Senior Hoop Time

On Tuesday 5th September three basketball teams headed off to Casey Stadium for a day of games against schools in our district.

All three teams played with great spirit and enjoyed mixed results.

Congratulations to the All Star Girls team for making it to the grand final.

Thanks to Mrs Scutt & Mrs Hinton for their assistance on the day in making sure things went smoothly.

Massive thanks to our wonderful parents who transported the students to and from the venue, scored and acted at cheerleaders.

House Captains School Council Presentation

Our fabulous House Captains presented to school council last week and the feedback they received was exceptional.

They showcased all the events they have been a part of and shared what they have enjoyed.

Wade - I have liked doing assemblies as it has helped me speak in front of others.

Ella - Being a leader has gave me the opportunity to learn things I never new about as a leader and gave me a chance for me to truly see how beautiful our community is.

Samara - It has helped me be more confident with public speaking and I can now help students with their struggles

Owen - I have learnt to respect others and teach them how to respectfully act.

Eli - I’ve learned to be the best and most respectful leader and I will remember the tips I have learned and carry them to my adult life.

Tegan - I have enjoyed encouraging my team to be their best selves and that being a house captain isn’t just about sport and seeing our school grow as one.

Mikayla - It has made me be more confident in myself and I feel like it has made me become more me. I have also learnt to respect others.

Atlanta -  Being a house captain has been really rewarding, it's also made me enjoy speaking at assembly and always cheering my team on.

Environmental Studies

Nature Play is all about bees, we have been learning about where bees live and the shapes that are used in the hive. We went into nature (and in the classroom) and tried to recreate the hexagon hive. We are currently designing beeswax wraps which should be on their way home soon.

We were so lucky to have two guest chefs come to our cooking class this week. A big thank you to John and Leonie who helped us cook fried rice. It is very impressive to see how much the Year 4 students have improved over the last two years. I hope they are making you some tasty treats at home!

Today (7/8) was Year 4a's final cooking lesson, we made Spinach and Ricotta Cannelloni and a Caprese Salad. We all sat down to share our last meal, the kids (well most) loved it!

The Year 5/6 students have been looking into the threats that face bees and how bees communicate. Bees communicate by doing a waggle dance and it was very entertaining to see the students try to recreate this.

A big shout out to Alek in Year 5/6A who drew this amazing picture of a bee as part of his learning task.

Artistic Flair- Music

Foundation and Junior School

Students have been listening for prompts in music and using a well known song (ABC song) to deconstruct and replace the words with the sounds of instruments.  Imagine singing A,B C, D, (drum), F, G, H, (bell), J, K, (cajon) ,M,N,O,(boomwhacker), Q, R, S, (cymbols), U,V,(tambour),X, Y and (cymbols)! The links to literacy were obvious as well as the children developing audiation skills (the ability to internalise a sound in your head). The students also learnt the names of many new percussion instruments. At the end of term students were encouraged to reflect on their semester of music and draw a picture of their favourite activity and instrument. Maybe you might get some ideas for their Christmas list??

One of the Foundation's favourite activities was the Rainbow Ring!

Grade 1 and 2

Students practised the song Boom Chicka Boom and made up their own song and dance 'styles'. Our favourites were angry style and jurrasic style.

They also learnt how to classify instruments into groups. Students put the percussion instruments into the following categories: metal, shaker, wood and skin and used their critical thinking skills to justify why their instrument belonged in the group.  Each group of instruments were played along with the Percussion Family song.

Middle School

Students have been listening to multiple styles of music and reflecting on how they felt about each piece. They found descriptive adjectives that matched the way the music made them feel and compared one song to another. In more recent weeks, students have been learning about osinatos (a repeated pattern of notes) and have used tuned instruments to create their own. Keyboards, xylpohones, glockenspiels, boomwhackers and hand bells were used. The new hand bells were a favourite as they are played by tapping the handle (think a bell at a desk to call for customer service).

Senior School

Studentshave performed their cup drumming composition to their peers and completed a self and peer reflection. It was interesting to note that students were well aware of the challenges they faced and considered how they would improve if they were able to do it again. I was impressed at their ability to articulate specific positive feedback for their peers as well as their ability to form suggestions regarding how others could improve.

This week the new  topic is listening to, composing and performing an ostinato (a repeated pattern). Students used melodic instruments including piano, boomwhackers, hand bells and xylophones to compose (and write notation) and perform their own ostinato.

Social Wellbeing

Foundation

The Foundation students have been practicing their yoga and mindfulness strategies to assist with their self regulation. We have also been using body language and facial expressions to express how we are feeling and also learning to read how the people around us are feeling by taking note of these expressions.

Junior School

Years 1 and 2 have been practicing their yoga and mindfulness strategies to assist with their self regulation. We have also been looking at why games need rules and what happens when we all cooperate, are respectful and play fairly. Students have been playing games and then changing the rules to make the games more inclusive and fun for everyone.

Middle School

Years 3 and 4 have been practicing their yoga and mindfulness strategies to assist with their self regulation. We have then been using our social skills to communicate clearly through a variety of different games and team challenges.

Senior School

Years 5 and 6 have been practicing their yoga and mindfulness strategies to assist with their self regulation. We have also been discussing their strengths, the obstacles in their life and how using our strengths can help us overcome things. We’ve also looked at famous failures such as Michael Jordan being dropped from his high school basketball team and Dr. Seuss being told his books are boring.

R U OK? DAY

Thursday 14 September is R U OK? Day. The students are invited to wear yellow on this day. This year the staff at Cranbourne South are going to walk 100 km's. Starting on Thursday, 14 September and finishing on Friday, 13 October 2023.

We are walking to show the connection between physical exercise and mental health.

We believe students need to have a positive perception of themselves and feel comfortable in the world they live in, that is why mental health is so important.

Donations raised for this fantastic cause will be going to the R U OK? Organisation.

If you would like to donate in support of all staff, or maybe a staff member in particular you can visit our donation page: https://join.ruok.org.au/s/5397/5123

Life Education

Over the past few weeks the students have been participating in Life Education sessions. Learning about friendships, cyber safety, medicines and the risks associated with alcohol. Some students were also selected to read out their health pledge to Harold when he came for a visit.

Smudge's Birthday

For our second Murrup day, the students took part in a book week and Smudge's birthday rotation day. We started with a book parade and then the students spent the day making birds, playing party games, making music or particpating in pass the parcel.
